New here, need help and support

Hello everyone,
My name is Logan and I found your forum today, and decided to post and say I need help. I am a 39 year old white male, 6 foot 4 and 283 pounds. While I don't LOOK obese, I know it is there and I want to lose this weight, and get the body into shape. It is not a vanity reason, but a vital health issue.

In August 2000, while working for my local sheriff department, I suffered a heart attack. This resulted in being off 6 weeks and having 2 stents placed via a angioplasty. I was told by the cardiologist that I would never have heart problems again. So I went on with life, trying to eat right, excersing when I could, but it never lasted long. I had no one there to encourage or motivate me, and I am a loner, because I am in an area where I just don't have friends.

Well on Father's Day, 2004, I was walking around my local Wal-mart and suffered chest pains. I drove myself to the local hospital, and after 4 days and the various tests, I was told I needed a triple bypass. I was informed of this by the very same cardiologist that told me I would not have trouble again, a fact I reminded him of. On July 15, 2004, I underwent a successful CABGx3, and 5 days later went home. On my way out the door, my cardiologist told me with this bypass, I would never have to worry about the heart issues I had before. I hope not for this surgery, without an medical insurance.

Well I continued to have heart pains after this, and was in and out of the hospital. On Febuary 24, 2005 I had two more stents placed in the blocked arteries (again by my cardiologist  ), and a further procedure in July 2005. Today I continue to live with chest pains, something my doctor tells me is likely to continue for the rest of my life.

Now what I am asking for is any advice, encouragement, motivation. I am diabetic, which does not help. I am single, and a bachalor who doe not know how to cook. I am sorry to say my meals consist of fast food and mexican. I am addicted to Lays Kettle Cooked potatoe chips as well. I know, I know, none of this is helping, but being stuck in a rut, with no encouragement, it is a receipe for disaster. So what advice can anyone here offer up? I need help with a excersise program I guess first off. Due to the heart issues, I am unable to work and my physical activity is mainly at these keyboards. So with no incme, there is no funds for a gym. So what can I really do at home, in a small room?

My email is eclipse7015@gmail.com and I use the same for yahoo messenger. I would love to hear from anyone who feels they might be able to help with advice, or just be a friend in this adventure with me. Thank you all for taking the time to read this.

Logan

Hey Logan check your inbox. :) Good Luck!!

Dude... I would venture a guess that fast food is killing you. Not knowing how to cook is an excuse. You need to ask yourself some serious questions now. Do you want to continue to live?

Addicted to potatoe chips? Are you kidding me. There is nothing in those chips that are physically addicting. It is all in your head. Crinkle up that bag that's in your right hand, throw it immediately away, and yell, "Never Again!"

You need to take a short course in getting control of your life and habits. Here it is: Wake the f*ck up! *smack*

Immediately, I would take a long hard look at your diet and change it. You may want to look into a cleansing for your entire body before starting this routine (anthony robbins has a nice one on his web page). Actually go to now and buy his multimedia products: "Personal Power II" and "Get the Edge" (I know they are expensive, you need to dig deep and beg, borrow or steal) After you have gone through both of them (in order), buy "Living Health" and follow it to a tee!

At this rate, you do not have much time my friend. If you keep thinking everything is going to be ok, and I will make myself better tomorrow, yada... You WILL die. Now, we all die. No question. But, how we die is a different story. Are you a coward who is going to die crying about his shameful life on his sofa in front of the TV with a bag of Lays in his lap? Or, are you going to look this trouble in the face and spit back, "Not on my watch!" Stand up and be a man.

I hate being so frank and blunt, but sometimes this is necessary to get someone motivated, and you strike me as this type of personality.

After you have solved your nutritional issues (which will take some doing and time), we will work on your workouts that you will do everyday (except Sunday) for the rest of your: from this point forward, now meaningful life!

Step to action son,
Rip

I would like to thank those who emailed and motivated me here. I am aiming at tomorrow being the first day of a healthy life. I guess I am going to start by using a local walking track and listening to podcasts as I start out. What is a good amount of time to walk for a novice?? Any other tips and suggestions as well would be appreciated

What's your 10-20 Logan? I was born in 1967 as well.

Do you smoke or drink? If so, let's work on stopping that ASAP. Don't hate the playa.

Drink a gallon of water each day (shoot for 8 ounces every thirty minutes).

Go slow and easy at first.

Above all else... Have fun bro!

Over and out,
Rip

10-20 is central Arkansas also known as HELL. I am a yankee stuck in the hot south lol.

I have never smoked nor done any drugs other than my prescriptions, so no problem there. I have drank maybe one bottle of booze in my life, a Smirnoff Black, so drinking is not an issue. I switch between Ozarka water and Diet Pepsi for my drink, and when when I drink water, I use a Route 44 sized cup. But yes, I drink twice the amount of soda as I do water, and hopefully that will be one of the changes.

Important thing is do not push yourself too hard right off. Walking is by far the best way to go. You need to build up your strength, build some stamina, and most importantly, ease your body into a workout condition. My uncle is 52 and has had 2 heart attacks and the advice from his cardiologist was that his feet and legs should hurt and make him stop before he feels short of breath for the first 30 days or so. You should look to walk at a pace that you can walk for 30 - 45 minutes to start. So monitor your pace and slow down if you start feeling short of breath. Once your body gets used to the stress of the workouts, you can start to push it a little bit more. After the first 30 days, shoot for 60 minutes. Adjust your speed to challenge yourself as the workouts become easier.

You can also eat fast food and do it smart. Instead of a Big Mac and Fries, try a grilled chicken salad with the lite italian dressing and a fruit and yogurt parfait. Instead of a cheesesteak, try one of the lowfat Subway subs on wheat bread. When you go to a restaurant, look at the "health" or "Light" section. If you insisnt on a burger as a treat. Avoid the specialty sandwiches with a ll the sauces and whole fat cheese. Just get a plain hamburger and leave the fries for the next victim. As far as prepping a meal at home, its not hard. Buy a george forman grill and some McCormick dry rubs and you can cook your own steaks, boneless chicken breasts or pork chops and they'll be really tasty. Frozen veggies are easy and pretty good for you as well. Stick to green veggies, theyre the best for you. Avoid excess bread, pasta, and potatoes. If your cabinets are littered with cookies, cakes, mac and cheese, rice aroni, and ramen noodles, you need to get rid of all that crap. Temptation is something you do not need right now.
