New guy

Hey everyone, I'm new here.

My name is Mike and my wife and I joined the gym last week...

I'm 25, about 5'11", slim but a little bit of a belly and weigh 197lbs. Nobody believes me when I tell them I weigh 197lbs and I'm guessing a chunk of that weight is in my legs as I used to play a lot of soccer and have thick calves/thighs.

I want to get rid of the belly, get some more muscle and have more energy (I'm always tired...always). Much more energy.

My diet is pretty crappy and I always have a big meal at the end of the day...would love some tips in this area as well as I'm sure I'm not doing well.

I have started a 5-day routine at the gym. Each day (first thing in the morning before breakfast) I warm up, exercise a different muscle group (about 3 machines, 3 x 8-12), then do 20-40 minutes of cardio.

Right now, my triceps are killing me (!!!) which I was worried about but after reading some stuff here I guess it's just the first time they've been worked in a long time...as for cardio, I jogged/ran 45 minutes without any problems a few days ago so I can't be in that bad of shape...right?

I've already noticed that, although I'm not much more awake, I am much more alert on days that I go to the gym. Also, I feel like I'm actually starting to control the muscles in my body rather than just slouching along through my day...if that makes any sense.

Anyway, just starting - I would love to hear some starter tips from you guys based on what I've said here.

Thanks!

Welcome Mike, i don't recommend weight training on an empty stomach. I also recommend mostly free weights if you want to build some lean muscle mass.

Diet, weight training and cardio will determine your progress, in that order.
