Hello!
Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Jeanette Jackson, 47, married, unemployed, dozens of hobbies.
I have been overweight for many years but I was shocked into reality when I had my cholesterol tested - 231. When I got home from seeing my doctor, I weighed myself & got another unwelcome shock - I weighed 240 lbs (and I'm only 5'5")
I started dieting using guidelines from the American Heart Association & also my own common sense. I am now a vegetarian, thanks to my husband & my hobbies.:) I exercise 6 days a week on a treadmill & I've built myself up to walk 3 miles a day.
Since the end of April, I have lost 40 lbs but my ideal weight is 130 so I still have 70 pounds to go.
I joined the forum because I am desperately in need of support. For the past 3 weeks, I have not lost a pound & in fact, have gained 4 using the same regimen I have been following.:(
I am at the end of my rope. There is so much advice & so many tips on the Internet that I no longer know if I'm even doing the right thing. There are so many diets that I don't know if I'm eating the right things. My first big goal was to get under 200 lbs & so far, I have failed.
I am afraid that the weight will never come off & I will be stuck at 200 lbs or so forever. I never considered going on a liquid diet program like Optifast or having my stomach stapled but now I'm starting to wonder if I was wrong for not considering these options.
I thought I could do this myself, exercising & following a low calorie, low fat diet. But it stopped working. What am I doing wrong?
Please help & thank you!

Welcome to the forum- you've certainly come to the right place for encouragement and support :

You might want to start yourself a diary, to keep track of what you're doing here, it also gives us the opportunity to get to know you beter. and vice versa... :) it also gives you a place to write down what you are eating, and if you don't have a food journal already -you might want to get one... those are wonderful for really keeping yourself honest...

Welcome To The Forum Neighbor I Am In Louisville As Well Lets Do This Girl I Know We Can!!!

Awesome!

Wow it's great to know that someone from this forum is living in the same city with me! How about this great Louisville weather? Stick around for a minute & it'll change. (NOT always true) Would love to meet you but I understand if you're cautious & shy about strangers. But if you're a redneck woman, you're my kinda gal LOL My email is hillbillyjackcat@insightbb.com if you'd like to drop me a line! And thanks for the encouragement. I know we can do this! Nothing can stop a woman with her mind made up!

Welcome! Sometimes changing the routine helps. Your body probably got used to the same exercise routine. Try to do something else besides walking.

Good luck!

Welcome! We all hit a rut at some time or another, you just have to push a little harder to get the wheels up and out of it! Maybe changing the excersie routine a little, add a little more cardio, or increase a physical activitiy that you love to do. Welcome again, and good luck on moving down past 200!

Thank you everyone

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the warm welcome & all the ideas. Started doing an additional 30 mins cardio & started weight lifting today. My husband is a great coach & my legs are strong but I'm afraid my arms are shouting "wimpy, wimpy, wimpy":)

I'm a Southern Newbie, too!

Welcome jjacks! I am also starting at 235 (240 on a fat day). Unlike you, I have not been able to get under 225. My problem is finding time to exercise. I am 36 (the perfect age for fat to settle right in and stay) and I have 4 kids. Not an excuse but a reason at the moment. I am finishing my Masters of Education and I am getting ready to start my internship so I am hoping I just won't have time to eat. ;)

I think the idea of doing a new exercise is great. You sound excited again and your body will probably respond to something different.

Everyone here is very nice. I am doing the diary. I just started and I am going to log what I eat so I can have some sort of accountability.

I also check in on the 200+ Club. They are very encouraging.

P.S. How did you give up meat??? My body wouldn't know what to do without beef!

Welcome jjacks. Your body gets used to exercising very fast so you have to change it up occasionally. And I know what you mean about your arms saying wimpy wimpy wimpy. My trainer made up a schedule for me and right now I can barely follow it. If I am supposed to do 3 set of 12 Dumbell Flyes, and I am only able to do 3 sets of 8, then I will work on it to make it 3 sets of 9 as my next goal. I know its tough but you will amaze yourself.(That sounds like a Curves thing....sorry) You are going to get alot of support on this forum. People here are all striving for similar goals as yours. Have a great evening and will look forward to watching your progress.:D

Just wanted to give a note of encouragement...don't quit. No one ever said it would be easy...we run into hard day, but they don't last forever...

Walking on treadmill is a good exercise. However, I do recommend walk outside once or twice a week. You certainly get better mileage by varying your routine a bit. Don't worry if it seems to be going nowhere at the moment. Your body may have learn how to preserve energy. It is best to give your body a surprise by altering your exercise programs.

I feel very fortunate

Thank you again to everyone, I feel very fortunate to have so much support!

To wifeandmommy - the vegetarian thing is kind of a funny story. I am a very soft hearted person, veterinary technician & multiple pet owner. I started reading about horse slaughter in the US & the efforts to stop it. I was just going on & on one night to my husband about how horrid I thought this was. And David (my hubby) asked me if I thought it was allright to slaughter animals in an equally cruel way if they weren't as smart as horses. I thought about this & decided I would never again eat anything where cruelty & abuse are part of the routine of getting the meat to my table. What REALLY helped me give up meat was to visit the slaughter sites about pigs, cattle, chickens. Once you've seen those pics, you won't want to eat meat again, trust me! But I also practised a little brain washing on myself. When I watch TV & see a commercial for steaks or burgers or something, I think of those pics I saw & I also think Icck! Chloesterol, fat, artery clogging, fried, nauseating. It's worked pretty good but for some reason I can't brainwash myself in the same way whenever I see chocolate! I just can't look at chocolate & say yuck! LOL:D

To everyone who isn't a vegetarian: This was a personal decision of mine. Whatever you do is great - I don't judge anyone or get fanatic about this thing. In fact, David grilled a steak for himself last weekend. So if I talk about my vegggie-ism, I am not insulting you or judging you!:)

To Jodee: You have my promise that when Thursday rolls around & I have to lift again, I will definitely be going for more. I don't think I could do less unless I just quit lifting LOL When I said wimpy, I meant really wimpy!:)

To Lovely: Thank you for the encouragement. I won't quit. This can be a good or bad thing. I tend to be very stubborn & hardheaded. :) Good in this case, not always so great in others!

To Turkey Walk: I would indeed love to walk outside but the neighborhood I live in isn't always safe. And no one is home during the day - the whole neighborhood is empty. I tried taking one of my dogs for a walk but St. Bernards hate the heat & I couldn't work up to a good pace because the dog (a male) had to stop every 3 seconds & pee on something. Hopefully, when it cools off some & I'm at a better fitness level, I can start jogging with my husband in the early am before he goes to work. :)

To Brambo: I know exactly what you mean about stress. But how do you get rid of it? Maybe I should try some yoga. If you've got a good way to relieve stress, please share with me - I have got to be the fattest Type A personality ever! (You would think nerves would at least burn a few calories Hmmph!):D

Time to do the diary thing! Thanks again
Love ya 'bye
Jeanette
