New and need some good advice! Please help

Hi all,

I see there are a lot of questions posted on this forum, so you ppl are probably very busy, but I'd appreciate it a lot if you also take the take the time to look at mine.

I'm a 17 year old girl, turning 18 soon and I have finally set my mind on toning up and losing some weight the healthy way. I have lost pounds by going on a fad diet, but when I quit the pounds were back on in no time. To make things worse, christmas is coming up, and even though I really do like it, I'm afraid I'll gain even more. What I want to do is lose some pounds before christmas, try to eat as healthy as possible at christmas (to a certain limit: nobody likes someone who says no to everything at Christmas) so that when the holidays are over, there isn't too much 'damage.'

Anyone have any ideas on how to do that?

some more info on me:

I'm 5'8, currently weighing around 135 lbs (could be a little more.) I know that's not heavy, but I have a lot of bodyfat, so it doesn't look all that great. I eat 3 meals a day (I heard I should eat about 5, but I dunno how to do that in school)

Breakfast is rice crispies with milk,
lunch varies: I usually buy it at school (I usually go for the sandwiches)
Diner: whatever my mom cooked up. (Problem is, it's not really low in cals. Pasta with a cheesesause, potatoes with sausages and gravy, chinese food...and at some times a salad)
snacks: usually some nuts lik almonds or peanuts.

For exersise: I just got myself a gym membership, but because of my school scedules, I can only go 2 times a week. I do take long walks with the dog.

I hope that's enough info. If not, say what else you need and I'll put it up. Please tell me what I can do to lose weight and tone up! Any tips on how to custimise a good diet would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

As far as christmas goes, the best advice anyone can give you is to just eat and enjoy a full dinner, steer clear of a lot of cookies, candies, and leftovers. The damage will be minimal.

Since you're still a teenager, you're pretty much at the mercy of your school system and parents UNLESS they allow you the freedom and you have the initiative to prepare you're own meals. If you don't have that initiative , thats ok. Just watch portions and you still should be ok. It may not be the best, but if you want true results, you should learn to prepare you're own meals.

As far as the 5 meals thing, most people think its better to eat 5 small meals (i am one of them) but its best to eat practically. If you can only eat 3, then thats what you eat. Remember though, snacks count as meals.

Workout wise, you are going to need to step it up. If you want to , post your school schedule and lets see if we can find some workout time in there.

With a little dedication and knowledge you can get where you want. We can give you the knowledge, the dedication has to come from you. Its just dependant on how bad you want it.

Its really sad how little education that our kids get on how to take care of themselves. The school food is generally a nightmare, and there is virtually no PE.

Christmas will be non issue, if you get your nutrition straight. I am one of those that does the 5+ meals/day. Looking at what you are eating, I would say that you are taking in too high a % of calories from fat.

From an exercise standpoint you will need to cut out some more time for yourself. 2 days is great, but I don't think its enough. Those dog walks might do you better if they were jogs!

Unfortunately Wendy, the problem with school food isn't necessarily the schools fault, its the governments. I had a friend whose mother was the administrator of a school cafeteria. In Ohio, the states mandate very simple nutritional guidelines, and they're not very good. That coupled with very little money allocated to the cafeteria program mean that the quality of school menus is awful. It's sad but true, the state doesn't care how our kids eat, all they have to do is make sure they give them the opportunity :(.
