Hello folks, my name is Louise. I went to the doctors last friday and got weighed, I was 18 stone and 13lb :O I could not believe I had put on so much weight!! I burst in to tears, my poor doctor didn't know what to do with himself lol. I've always been a big girl, I've done weight watchers and slimming world and atkins.....None ever worked for long, I was always really hungry on diets. Last year I was around the 16 stone mark, so I've piled on 3 stones in a year!!

Im very lazy, I work from home so I'm not moving about that much, which is the big problem. Now that I want to be moving around I have plantar fasciitis in one foot, which has gotten quite bad over the last few weeks, so I'm hobbling about. I also have mild arthritis in my lower spine! Both these conditions are more than likely due to me being so over weight! I'm basically carrying another person around with me. This is putting some pressure on my body and Im scared im going to get diabetes. Im also taking medication to combat pain and swelling. My feet swell up quite bad at times due to water retention. I feel like since I have turned 40 (in march) that I'm just falling to bits. All self inflicted I know. I've gotten in to such bad habits, they are so hard to break.

I decided to follow this low carb eating plan, for 2 weeks, Im on my second day and I'm not having a problem with the food, its very delicious, however i am missing the bread and pasta! Im craving bread right now. I also used to drink a can of coke every night, for the last 5 years!! I'm missing that too.

I think I need a miracle guys lol

Louise ;)

the craving go away after 2-3 weeks of low carb.

Hi Louise

I know it's hard (I've been there) but if you really want to do this you will! I think it's really difficult to cut out everything you love all at once. Instead you should try to find the "low carb" or "sugar free" option to replace some of your favourites. I know there's so much controversy on diet soda etc. but if it helps you get to a healthy weight range it's effective.

Personally, I found that "fad" diets just don't work and you land up losing weight and the just picking it all back up again, with a little extra to boot.

My suggestion is 6 small meals again, make sure there's loads of veggies and up to 2 fruit a day. Once you drop a little weight you'll start feeling better so you'll then be able to add in exercise and fine tune the diet even more.

Happy to share my eating plan with you. Although the food might be pretty different due to different countries but I think you'd probably have a lot more options available to you.

Good luck! And keep us all updated.

Thank you for the replys guys :) I got weighed yesterday and I have lost 3lb since last friday, a small amount, but an amount none the less. I've swapped fizzy juice for vimto high juice, its not as good but its way healthier and im starting to enjoy it...a little. I did cheat and have some bread yesterday but hey ho Im no gonna beat myself up over it.

Thank you for the link nancy, I will be checking it out tonight after work :)

Lizzy I would love to see what your eating too xx

A weekly loss of 3lbs is both attainable and sustainable, Louise. Provided you're maintaining a daily calorie deficit, in addition to eliminating consumption of simple, refined sugars, you'll remain upon the right track.

As much as you probably want to, don't attempt to completely overhaul every aspect of your diet immediately. While elimination of simple sugars is paramount, seek to introduce changes gradually, figuring what works for you and what doesn't.

Provided daily dietary intake is relatively high in lean protein consumption (35-40%) and that complex carbohydrates and healthy fats constitute 30% respectively, you should continue to enjoy a weekly loss of around 2lbs.

I appreciate that the issues affecting your plantar may somewhat limit your activity (as a runner I know how painful it can be), but before you settle down to work from home, possibly consider taking to your local swimming pool to burn calories early on a morning. Don't feel self-conscious either, since the array of knee suits available (www.proswimwear.co.uk) are incredibly flattering. Moreover, swimming shouldn't be too difficult upon your back either.

As for your plantar fasciitis, if you don't already do, while sat working at home, make a conscious effort to perform foot strengthening exercises (toe scrunches/plantar/dorsi-flextion) to help strengthen your arch, in addition to performing hanging heel drops regularly.

Thank you Mr nice guy! I do the stretches and exercises whilst sitting at my desk, and I put ice on it 3-4 times a day to reduce swelling. I just bought a pair of flip flops that are specifically for plantar, and what a difference they have made already. I'm feeling more positive about it now, I will beat this damn thing.

Yeah 3lb a weeks actually quite good going, I do think in the beginning I will loose more anyway, and prob a lot of water too, slow and steady wins the race though, I certainly don't want to be piling it all back on then some.

Ive also started doing some simple yoga stretches, especially for my back which have been really helping. :D

I’m not sure how long you’ve suffered with it, but there’s also a chance that a fair amount of scar tissue will have built up in the tendon and your heel. If you don’t already have one, I’d invest in a set of spiky massage rollers (I use 66 Fit, available on Amazon) to help break it up. Don’t limit its use to just your plantar, though; roll the whole foot to ease tension throughout.

One of the reasons soft muscle tissue injuries of the feet can take so long to heal rests upon the fact that blood supply to the tendons is poor, meaning that scar tissue cannot be carried away from the affected area very effectively. Coupled with fact that your feet carry you around, resting them for prolonged periods (providing the tendon with the recovery it needs) remains incredibly difficult.

If you’ve not used a massage roller of any kind upon your plantar yet, the first time you do, it will undoubtedly feel painful and perhaps even ticklish, but any ticklishness will subside once you become used to rolling your plantar regularly, beginning to break down the scar tissue.

You don’t need to use it for long either. Perhaps five minutes at a time, three times a day. However, if you happen to be under the care of a physio or a podiatrist, consult their opinion before implementing the use of massage rollers.

Although it’s helping your back, yoga may also bring relief to your plantar (particularly downward facing dog). Those exercises that provide a stretch in the calf will also stretch your plantar, too. Moreover, yoga is gentle, so you shouldn’t aggravate your plantar any more than it already is.

As for weight loss, in the first few weeks you probably will enjoy a satisfying level of loss, but to ensure that you don’t plateau (if you’ve not already done so), consult BMR/TDEE calculators, since they’re largely accurate in determining energy requirements, based upon current measurements (age/weight/height) and level of activity.

Having obtained both, seek to introduce a daily calorie deficit of around 500Kcal from your TDEE, which should yield a loss of around a 1b a week on its own. When you include the calories expended through exercise and every day activity, the level of loss can increase to 2-4lbs per week (depending upon starting weight).

As your body begins to weighs less it’ll require fewer calories, so re-assess both regularly in order to avoid the dreaded plateau. With each stone lost, your BMR will reduce by around daily 100Kcal.

Lastly, in the initial interim, provided you’re consuming sufficient daily calories to satisfy that of your BMR, you should continue to enjoy a satisfying level of loss over the coming weeks/months.
