Need to know what these things are called....

Now, English isn't my native language, so forgive me for the slightly stupid question.

I want a machine that shreds my food. Especially stuff like salad, carrots, apples and so on. I am lazy, and fed up with doing it manually on a grater.

Now, I know there are things called 'food processors', but they seem to be multi-functional and I am not entirely sure if they can handle things like carrots for example. Other things I found on eBay were things like Smoothie makers, but I have one, and no way am I going to throw a carrot into that.

I looked for 'food shredder', but all I could get was spare parts for food processors.

So, if anybody knows what I mean, and has idea what exactly those things are called, me, my nails and my fingertips would be forever grateful!!

Good food processors definitely can handle carrots. As long as the "mouth" is big enough. The shredder attachment is really handy and you can even shred up a good coleslaw with one.

They can do the job of a grater in seconds.

I have one by Hamilton Beach.

So I would have to get a food processor with a shredder attachment?

Sounds pricey....oh well, I'll scout eBay and see what I can come up with.

I would say 90% of them come with the attachment already.

I think my Hamilton Beach was $50 from Walmart.

It's called a husband. PUT HIS ASS TO WORK!!! :cuss:

Maybe a chopper..... actually.. I just had a look at choppers,,... smaller, and more inexpensive. Black and Decker makes a small one.
HEY... look at this.... looks fast and easy.

Yeah, I had a look at those as well. Still manual, but much easier to use and less wear and tear on the old fingers. Gonna make a trip to a store that sells these things where I can have a look at them, then decide and get it cheap of the internet somewhere. :)

Let us know what you decide, and how well it works! thanks.

A blender!

Yeah, but I always thought a blender was more something to make smoothies with, you know something that chops things really fine or even juices them, not something that grates them.

It's soooo confusing, I tell ya! *lol*

Undecided about hand-cranked or motor-driven yet, but I'll find something.

I went for a manual one (chopper), and it works reasonably well, but is pretty hard work - especially with stuff like carrots or other hard vegetables, and sometimes I have to pre-cut things. I had a look at some of the electric ones, and it seems that if you want to get one that doesn't break when you stick a carrot into it, it has to be one of the more expensive ones.

I've ordered one now, will let you know once I've got it and tried it out.

I am curious to know what you decided on too. Another manual option is a mandoline food slicer. A friend of mine has one and I think I need it! :giggle:
