Where do you buy running shoes? Of course, I know where I can---I've bought several pairs over the years, but I'm just wondering where all of you buy them. Where do you find you have the best overall experience in terms of finding the right shoe and getting the best price?

And is there a certain brand/model that you highly recommend for fairly flat feet (like mine)?

If you want personalized service with a little higher price go to a mom and pop specialty store. If you've done your own research go to Dick's or something and maybe save a few bucks
 
We have a place called Fleet Feet that I get my shoes from. They will watch you run on a treadmill and on the street and then determine what they think is best. They will give options: comfortable shoes, pure running shoes, trail shoes, etc., depending on what your goals are. I am a moderate runner, used to run 25-30 miles a week and now I do more HIIT and gym stuff. So I went with the comfortable option because I will be using them for more than just running.
 
I always get my Asics at See Jane Run, small shop in San Francisco for women. I like being fitted for the right shoes and when I checked Zappos.com, they sold the same shoe for the same price. So not all small stores will charge more. The customer service I get there is far better than anywhere else. :)

Just wanted to add something here:

There is *nothing* more important than a good pair of shoes. I had been told that I had prone feet, I was flat footed, and that I would get pain eventually from running. and I did.

I DO have flat feet, but I found out yesterday that they are very flexible, and for YEARS had been suggested the WRONG shoes! Everyone said "Motion control","Motion control". I also found out that I may have a stance that is prone, but I run...well, I run like I was made to run :D

I went to Roadrunner and I had a marathoner go thru and have me try on shoes and test them out- and found that neutral shoes are what I should be wearing and for the first time in a year, last night I ran 5 miles without any pain!

So, find someone who knows about running and knows their shoes, really knows about shoes, because there is nothing more important than a good pair of shoes.....

I used to work with fitting running shoes and as has already been mentioned - I can't stress how important good quality shoes are. Be wary of big stores that just have a footwear section, opt instead for a smaller store that may charge a little more, but you're paying for the time and expertise. The staff should assess your gait and recommend shoes for you as an individual, rather than just going off the top of their head for shoes for flat feed. It isn't so much your flat feet that are the issue, but how much flexibility there is in the foot, otherwise known as the extent to which you 'pronate' (roll in). The shoe should be fitted to the width of your foot (certain brands are narrower than others).

I am about your size and like you I have flat feet. Asics GT 2120 Duomax work well for me and are not particularly expensive. I buy them at my local sporting goods store where I can try on different brands and sizes.

yeah, live and learn :) My problem was my doctors were telling me this, then I would tell the sales person who didn't know better. You are right, it is very important that you go somewhere where they know what they are doing.

Now to find a good sports bra....the next most important item... a sports bra......:)
