Sport need some advice on protein requirments..

Sport Fitness
hi, i'm hoping some of you can give me some clarity on protein needs. what is the generally accpeted amount of protein needed by body weight for an adult - both active, and sedentary? i'm finding a lot of confusing things like 1 gram per pound of body weight, can that be accurate? i'm talking about for basic health, not weight gain. thanks a lot everyone.

for basic health u should have a serving of protein with each meal. at the end of the day you should have (for basic health) 50g of protein a day. I usually get in about 80-90g of protein a day and I weight 167lbs, and I still make muscle gains. That 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight is if your either bulking or want the absolute fastest and optimal muscle growth possible.

Here is some food for thought on higher consumptions of protein (this is from studies done: Fern, Tarnpolsky et al., Lemon et al., Forslund et al.)-

3.3 g/kg (of bodyweight) protein produced greater gain in muscle mass.

1.4 g/kg increase in protein synthesis

1.8g/kg required for positive nitrogen balance

2.5g/kg produces positive nitrogen balance and negative fat balance

In other words-the subjects on the high-protein diet burned more fat. In case you're wondering about the whole gram to kg (kilograms)measurement, it's basically, .9-1.25 grams of protein per pound of bodweight.

The requirement by the FDA for a sendentary individual is .8 grams per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight per day.

Toby, very few people actually know their bodyfat percentage and if it was protein need based on lean bodymass, very few would actually know their needs.

And actually protein is measured in gram to kg of bodyweight. The general athlete or gym goer would do well to consume 1.4-2.6 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight.

you can do it with both lbs and kgs - i have read several books that use lbs in their explanations - it is just another way to express the same thing

you can estimate your level of lean mass if you care enough!..

since were on the topic of protein.. ok, tuna fish sandwichs are an excellent form of getting protien.. does it really matter if im mixing mayo and mustard in with the tuna???

it doesnt matter - i mix salad cream with mine..

its bad in the way that the sauce you're putting in is not really any good for you

but the fact that it makes you enjoy what you are eating - therefore making you more likely to continue eating it in the long term - outweighs the bad points

Yep. Sometimes the tradeoff for sanity is a little junk with your protein. I mean, we can't all be hyper obsessed about this all the time. It's satisfactory to make yourself knowledgeable about it and live life healthy - rather than being a health beast :)

It is possible to live *too* healthily! As you eat cleaner food, your body becomes much more sensitive - so that greasy sausage you used to eat all the time when you were tubby now gives you stomach cramps ;)
