Hi i'm Kirti here & want to lose 60lbs within 5 months. Is it possible?I'm vegeterian.Any body give me diet plan as well as exerciese plan to achieve my goal.Thanks.

I think it depends on your current weight. If you are 300 pounds, it's probably easier than if you were 150 pounds.

My thoughts exactly.

And I doubt anyone is going to give you an all out diet and exercise plan. Reason being, spoon feeding people what they 'have' to do usually doesn't work.

Have you read the stickies?

Thank u steve i'll read sticky posts.I have 2 kids now vacation so not possible for me to read all sticky posts.I'm in a hurry because i want to start from a new year.

The new year is just another day, IMO. Most who get all hyped up over the new year don't last long in terms of their new found inspiration and goals. It's better to take things nice and slow. Focus on small changes that you can mentally manage and once new habits are adopted, implement new steps on top.

Reading the stickies will give you a nice foundation of knowledge to move forward with. Going forward with solely some routine you picked up from a member here or whatever doesn't arm you with much. Most any routine or any diet will work. For how long? That's another story that's completely individual. Knowledge of the basics allows for the ability to modify your approach to keep progress coming forever.

I'd start with this thread and go from there.

Possible, perhaps. But it would require a LOT of exercise. I don't know your stats, but the heavier you are, the easier it would be for you to lose weight faster. However, if you are only overweight, and not obese, it would be quite difficult. Whatever you do, though, don't try to lose weight fast by cutting your calories extremely low! Unless you are very short/petite, I'd say you shouldn't ever go below 1,500 calories in your diet (and 1,800 would probably be even better). Less than that will probably cause your metabolism to shut down!

If you absolutely must lose weight this fast, then you should supplement a moderate diet with lots of exercise. Of course, you will probably have to work your intensity and duration of exercise up as you get in better shape (also, please check with your doctor about any exercise program, especially if you are overweight or have a medical history). Elliptical machines can burn a very high number of calories quickly, as can scuba diving, running, and other activities. Please be careful not to overexert yourself at first. It is easy to overdo it the first workout (pretty much because your legs tend to go numb and you don't notice how very much work they are doing). If you do too much all at once, you will feel it the next day! As you have 5 months (20 weeks), you should make a workout schedule that gradually gets longer and harder. For example, week one: 4 days per week 45 minutes walking, week two: 5 days per week 45 minutes walking/elliptical, week three: 5 days per week 1 hour elliptical/jogging, etc. That may be slow for you, or fast depending on your cardiovascular health. Just be careful and stay in touch with how your body feels. If your workout makes you hurt, you are pushing too hard. If you can easily sing while you exercise (after the first couple weeks), you may be going a little too easy.

No. Your metabolism does not work like this.

Steve, if you are referring to the exact numbers, perhaps they aren't completely correct. I was erring on the side of caution since I don't know this person's statistics (could be barely overweight wanting to go slightly underweight). However, when you decrease your caloric intake too much too quickly, your metabolism generally responds by slowing down to match or even surpass the deficit you are creating. The exception to this is when you use exercise to counteract that and force your metabolism to be a bit faster. So, what part of what I said was incorrect? I said "shut down" as a metaphor to emphasize my point, not to claim that the metabolism stops working. I apologize if I should have been more specific. I've taken too many writing classes that want you to strongly emphasize the point, so I may have exaggerated the metaphor a bit. I'll try not to do that in the future. :)

Nope.

I was referring to the statement you made about metabolism shutting down if you don't eat enough.

However, when you decrease your caloric intake too much too quickly, your metabolism generally responds by slowing down to match or even surpass the deficit you are creating.

I'm not sure why you're telling me this.

The exception to this is when you use exercise to counteract that and force your metabolism to be a bit faster.

This is incorrect.

Your body adjusts to insufficient amounts of energy (calories) regardless of where said insufficiency is coming from.

From what you're suggesting here, I'd highly recommend you read the stickies here on the forum. Sounds like you could stand to learn a bit about metabolic adaptation in response to hypocaloric conditions.

So, what part of what I said was incorrect? I said "shut down" as a metaphor to emphasize my point, not to claim that the metabolism stops working.

If you're going to put yourself in a position of authority on the subject, I'd suggest being clear. Understand that most who aren't well read on the subject wouldn't no you were trying to 'emphasize a point."

You wouldn't believe how many people believe metabolism shuts down in the face of under eating.

The belief stems from so called 'professionals' who are either unclear or uneducated.

I apologize if I should have been more specific.

No need for apologies.

I've taken too many writing classes that want you to strongly emphasize the point, so I may have exaggerated the metaphor a bit. I'll try not to do that in the future. :)

Interesting. You'd think said classes would emphasize the importance of maintaining the integrity of the information you're presenting. Sure, emphasizing a point is great, but doing so to the extent integrity is ruined... that's strange to me.

Anyhow, kirti251, I hope that you found the advice/information you were looking for. I apologize for saying "shut down" instead of "slow down", I simply wanted to emphasize how important it is not to eat too little. Good luck with your weight loss goals.

We understand your intent.

Good intent doesn't make poor information any better.

You were incorrect regarding metabolism shutting down as well as exercise correcting a slowed metabolism.

I'm sure you think I'm a dick, but it's really not my intent. I just like people to have the most accurate information possible.
