Need help with training.

So i'm training for the army, and i left it a little late. I can do 1.5miles 2.4km in 11:30mins ish But I would like to get it down by at least a min or down to 10mins. I got about 6 weeks to do it.

If I run the 1.5miles I am knackered and i cant run any more. I can run for longer at a slower pace but I am just wondering what would be better, run fast for a short time, or slow for a long time.

Any links would be great

Cheers.

****, 6 weeks? You're ****ed.

:p

How old are you and hows your weight?

Do one HIIT session (20 minutes) per week, one long run (in this case 3 miles) in whatever time, just try to get through it, regardless of pace. Get your legs used to dome mileage. Finally bust out one 1.5mile best effort run.

Seriously six weeks isn't the end of the world. They'll get you fit, but if you turned up for the army over here unable to go sub 10.30 they'll just turn you away, bot even beast you into shape.

Train hard and watch your shins.

I'm 19 and about 11 stone. I live in Britian too, and I think Wildly overexagerated on the 6 week thing lol. Have yet to apply but I will in about 2 weeks. Someone told me its about 6 weeks from apply to your 3 day test thing. On the army website they ask for the 1.5 miles in 12:45, but I guess they want it faster.

I was thinking of some kind of work out like this?

Mon Tues Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
HITT 30min HITT 30min HITT 1.5miles Rest

OK UK Army now we speak the same language.

If you can do HIIT for 30 minutes and can't run 1.5 miles sub-10.30 you're not doing HIIT right.

Just do it how I said, one 20 min HIIT for V02 max, one longer run to try and get some endurance into your legs so you don't crumple on the 1.5, and a 1.5 best time to get you used to running it and so you can guage your distance. I would also take a five day rest before you run, a little rest helps pick up your speed a good bit in my experience.

Now just need to what unit/branch/arm you want. You mention 12.45 so I assume you are heading for REME or something.

If you're thinking of going Para don't bother applying, train for another six months. For infantry, you're going to need 10.30. If you're female that will work in your favour. Non-combat arms you should get more leniency, but they will expect a 19yo to breeze it. Quite a few of your comrades will sail through, and there is always someone who turns up dreaming. Don't make that person you.

Great resource for you . Register, then search and then ask. They'll help you out loads.

I think 6 weeks may be a dream, any bearacracy over here would get beat by treacle in a race. Your looking at a week for your medical to go off and get approved, then a week for your interview, about two weeks for RSC and then probably three weeks to a month after that to start basic.

Get a bergen on, get some boots on, and go plodding round the countryside. Your legs should soon build up.

Thanks alot man very help full. I was going to try out for the infantry or the royal Artillery

The Parachute Regiment must complete the run in 9:18.
The Infantry and Pioneers must complete the run in 12:45.

The Royal Artillery, Royal Armoured Corps, Royal Engineers and Household Cavalry must complete the run in 13:15.

But I could alway try out for the paras after i get into the army.

Thanks for the info great help and it seems to know what your on about. Cheers

Pleasure mate, if you are heading for infantry I strongly suggest getting as close to 10.30 as you can, if not under. Times these days according to that site seem to have slipped...You could always go green slime, they only want 3miles in 24 mins as a basic requirement to earn you the right to the beasting of a life time ;)

Get in as good a shape as possible, at the end of the day more people will wrap due to being mentally 'unfit' as opposed to physically, just get your head in the game. Its not you versus the DS, its you versus the course

So, essentially, running 1.5 miles in 10 minutes means a constant pace at 9 mph? That is tough, and will take some work if you aren't used to running, good luck with it!!!
