CALORIES From FAT! (On most Nutrition Lables)

Is the amount of Fat Cal shown a part of the total cal per serving or is that something totally different? For example, one meal contains lets say 200 Calories, and next to that it says "Fat Cals: 50". Dose this mean that the meal is really 150 cal plus 50 from fat which equals 200? Or, fat cals are a not included in the total amount?

If someone could help me figure this out, I would appreciate it! Thanks

If a product says total: 200cals from fat:50cals, the total calories are 200. Its put on food like that as a marketing scam. Trying to trick people in to thinking "oh this has got 200calories but only 50 are from fat so it must be good for me, I'll buy it." Fat calories are no different from normal calories.

if you are looking at the label and it shows the fat cals, then it will also show the carbs, protein and total.

I am already on a Low Fat, Low Carb and increased protien diet but, that little part I mentioned above confuses me. There are people who are telling me that the amount is separate because the treadmill shows digitally that one is burning calories and fat calories shows up on a different screen.

Currently, I walk 2 times a day and two hours total, at 3.0 (MPH) for about 100 mins total daily and 2.5 MPH for 20 mins. (10 Min warm up @ 2.5 each session).

Treadmill shows me that I burned about 330 Calories and 100 Fat calories. What is the difference and would any one know if this is accurate?

I'm not too sure about the gym equipment part.
But with regards to the food, (well over here anyways), it tells us the total calories (we work on kilojoules on most products), then underneath there is the break up like how many grams of fats, carbs, proteins etc.
And I was wondering about how accurate this was, so I tried to work it out myself. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but in an article I read:

* For every gram of fat = 9 calories
* For every gram of protein = 4 calories
* For every gram of carbs = 4 calories; and
* For every gram of alcohol = 7 calories.

So to test, I worked this all out, then compared it to the total amount of calories that were there, and so I turned the kilojoules into calories, and there was about 2 calories difference between the 2!!! So I guess that was right.

I hope you can understand that and it helps, because it sure as hell helped me!!! ha-ha.

BTW: This is where I got that information from:

Info for calorie counting?

Where have you guys found the best resources for information on the calories contained in food. Websites would be preferrable for me, b/c i'm a bit short on cash to go out and buy a new book...

Also, I think I have this right, but I want to make sure. In order to loose weight counting calories, I need to figure out how many calories i would typically burn a day at my target weight, and then only eat that many... correct? and/or increase my exercise regimen so that I am burning more calories?

Well, to answer the original question. The amount that you should be looking at is the Calories. The Fat Calories is just a breakdown of the calories themselves. Just more information for you, but not necessary if you're doing just calorie counting.

Amomono, you are correct. I highly recommend these two sites. They help me a lot in counting calories. They also tell you how many calories you should be losing per day and things of that sort. :) and I haven't bought anything since I started...except a gym membership :p
