Hi,
I need some advise, I'm at a crossroads here. I started losing Jan 5th/09 from 338.7lbs to a few days ago 301.1lbs. I have had a goal to lose 40lbs by my b-day on the 11th of April. All seemed to be going good. All I do is watch my calories, wasn't counting exactly because I had some wiggle room. I have been exercising sparatically since the beginning but the past couple of weeks I've started 20 mins on the bike most nights, this week plus a brisk 30 min walk. All seems to be going great, I allow myself treats if I really want it, but most times it's not often and I still stay well within my range. The weight has been coming off. Until this saturday, my husband and I went to the movies, i've been doing great so I shared a popcorn with him. The next morning I weighed 306lbs!!! I figured something is wrong with the scale, is this water retention from the SALT? I could not possbily have put on 5lbs in a night. The only other thing different is I had an IUD put in the same day. I was dealing with it sensibly knowing it can't be right, but today I weighed at 304.8lbs, I'm doing everything right, eating and exercising and I'm wondering if it is water retention, is there anything I can do to help the situation, my goal date is approaching and I know it will affect me if I don't reach it. I've been working hard...and I just need a little advise if anyone has ever seen this before. 37lbs down and I don't want to get discouraged so early, i've got so far to go! Thanks for any help!

i seriously dont advise you to weigh yourself everyday cuz sometimes the meals are heavy and i gain 5 pounds overnight so it might be water retention or the meals although healthy were heavy and hopefully the weight will come off that is you didnt cheat on the diet.By the way congrats .You did a great job.keep up the good work.

pocorn with salt? salt makes you retain water? hmm sounds probable :)

Also when its 'that time of month' it can have a fair bit of effect.

Thanks for the replies. I've read the side effects of the IUD, and it is known for MAJOR water retention! I've been working hard all week and I'm back to 303.5lbs. So I'm almost back to where I was. Now I am having some menstral issues, so it has to be that. I'd admit if I cheated or wasn't good with the food...but I wasn't that's what makes this so hard for me to get. But I am realizing that this for now is out of my hands, until it regulates. As long as I keep doing my routine, it will even out eventually. The only reason I was so upset about it, was my goal date, I might still make it ..but you were right, I'm only going to weigh once a week...this daily weighing is driving me nuts! Hope for the best...thanks again for the help.

Scales as sabotage

I would put on 3 kilos right around my period. Still do, it's just that I don't weigh myself more than once every two to three months.

Try measuring yourself instead. I took measurements on a weekly basis. Sometimes the scales would go up, but the measurements would go down. Partially because as I built muscle, muscle weighs more than fat, but the toning effect reduces overall size.

When it's coming close to my period, I start to feel a little bloated, and my stomach measurement would increase by a centimetre or two, the following week it would be down by the same amount.

Just keep at it, you're doing so well. I know you want to meet your goal, but if you don't...is it worth throwing in the towel after you've come so far. You're doing this so that you'll keep it off. Applaud your achievements so far, ease up on the pressure on yourself.

Who knows two weeks after your deadline, you may be below your goal weight, and it will all be o.k.

Thanks for the support. I do realize that I need to lay off the scale. I have to let it go. I won't confine myself to timelines anymore. I will still set mini goals, but without a time limit. My time of the month is always difficult and I know that is what is affecting me, I'm sure when it's over, I will be down much more than I thought. Sometimes, you do things a certain way your whole life, and it's hard to set your mind to a new way. But I'm learning as I go, I have ease up on myself. The weight has to go down, if I follow my plan. Thanks again. I love this forum, it is keeping me going.
