Hi,

I'm 20 years old, 5'4" 127.6 lbs at the moment, and have a medium bone structure. I had a baby 7 months ago and since then have lost about 55 lbs. 125, possibly 120 lbs, is my goal. I have lost all of my weight through cutting calories and breastfeeding, I exercised for about 3 weeks somewhere in there but had to stop because of some health issues. I was very ill after the birth of my daughter with multiple complications, surgeries and other procedures, and only last week did I have my last procedure which will hopefully put an end to my complications and subsequent discomfort. I am ready to start exercising, even though I've lost a lot of weight I'm not toned at all and would like to firm up quite a bit. I know that I've lost a lot of muscle, I've spent weeks at a time in hospital beds and I'm a stay at home mom so it's hard to get out. I'm scared of the city that I live in so I don't go outside for walks and I don't like to drive so I won't go to the mall to walk, because we're adjusting to one income a gym membership just isn't a choice right now but hopefully it will be in a few months. For right now what I have at my disposal is a nice exercise bike, some Denise Austin exercise videos, 8 and 5 lb weights and an exercise ball. I take in 1500 calories a day and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter. I use slim-fast. I know that a lot of you don't support the use of slim-fast but I started using it a couple of weeks ago to shed the last 10 lbs. I like it because it has a lot of vitamins in it, it has no caffiene or appetite suppressants in it and it is safe for nursing mothers. A normal day of food for me is BREAKFAST: (180 calories) slim fast cappucino shake SNACK: fruit (grapefruit or grapes usually) LUNCH: (totals around 370 calories) slim fast chocolate brownie meal bar and sandwich made of:2 slices whole wheat bread, 2 tbs fat free miracle whip, 3 slices roast beef lunch meat and 4 slices smoked turkey breast lunch meat, and lettuce. SNACK: Peanut butter crunch slim fast snack bar. DINNER: (totals around 650 calories) 4 oz. chicken breast cooked on George Foreman grill, steamed carrots, and some kind of starch. SNACK: fruit or 100 calorie pudding cup. So I think that's about it. What would you suggest that I start doing to get into shape. I will probably have to up my calories when I start exercising right? Well, if you have any questions just ask :) Thanks

I'm am hardly a professional, but from what I've heard here, you should be eating at least 1500 calories, plus extra for the baby. I found this...

{Per Breastfeeding and Human Lactation (Riordan, 2004, p. 438), "The amount of energy needed by lactating mothers continues to be debated. The lactating mother need not maintain a markedly higher caloric intake than that maintained prior to pregnancy: in most cases, 400-500 calories in excess of that which is needed to maintain the mother's body weight is sufficient."}

Thank you, I've been on a 1500 calorie diet for 4 months and my baby is gaining weight like crazy, my milk supply never dropped and I have been losing a safe amount of weight each week. I did research, talked with the baby's pediatrician and my own doctor and they said that as long as those 3 requirements are met that I'm doing fine :)
