How many g's of carbs should a person (17, 160 lbs, 1500 calorie diet) consume while trying to burn fat and gain muscle?

I ususally just eat now about 67 (2 cups of cereal + orange) in the mouring.
Then about 35 - 45 in fruits and vegs through out the day.
So about 100 - 130 g of carbs a day.
700 - 900 a week

Thoughts?

Well, it's hard to lose fat and gain much muscle at the same time. You might be young enough to pull it off better than adults, but don't expect massive muscle gains if you're restricting carbs to lean out.
Actually, at 1500 cals a day, I wouldn't expect to see any bulking. That's a cutting diet.

That said, 100-130g of carbs for a cutting diet seems reasonable, though I'd lean more towards 100g on the days you're not training. I'd change cereal to old-fashioned oatmeal too. more filling, far more fiber...better for fat loss. a little Splenda and a dash of cinnamon, even a tbsp of natty PB for some EFA's and flavor boost.
mmmmmmm....

Is Total good for cereal?

Anyway, what should I do? I know muscle burns fat. And I can say now that I'm not that fat. Infact people say I'm not fat. I just have areas of fat that need to be cut down and leaned up. Should I eat more calories more frequently thropugh out the day so I can speed up metabolism for weight loss and gain muscle? How does eating more than 1500 calories add muscle anyway? I though it was jsut what the food consited of (protein).

I would choose old fashioned oatmeal over any boxed cereal first. If I had to then go with a boxed cereal, I'd aim for one of the Kashi brands, like Go Lean Crunch! because they are very high in fiber, low in fat and refined sugars. Uncle Sam's is another decent box'd cereal.

Total isn't bad though...far better than most name brand cereals...just not the top of the list.

Hey, I found a few more facts that I wanted to include for selecting a good cold cereal.

Should have:
at least 3g of fiber per 100 calories
sodium content in mg should be lower than total calories

Looking at a serving of Total: 140 calories 3.5g of fiber 264mg of sodium

So it's a little low on fiber and almost double the sodium.

Try looking for the new Fiber One Honey Clusters: 170 cals 14g of fiber 170mg sodium
and it tastes pretty good. I also like plain fiber one...it goes good in cottage cheese, yogurt, and you can add it to Total to fix the fiber content ;)
