Need Advice

A year ago I was cycling around 300-400km per week. I'd cycle to work and back each day which was around 10km round trip, I'd ride in the evenings for 50km 2-3 days per week and then I'd have a long ride of over 100km one day at the weekend. This year I have been unable to do this. My bike became completely destroyed and I couldn't afford to repair it. I live in quite a poor country and don't earn a huge amount. So this summer I started running. My problem is that I am now out of shape in terms of body fat %. I can easily run for 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours and do 10-15km 3-4 days per week but it doesn't get me in shape like the cycling then I'd do so much more. I really need to build a new routine where I can push myself hard like I did when I cycled long distances in very hard gears and did as many climbs as possible. I can pay to go to the gym and use spinning bikes but this gets boring quickly because it requires no technical skills and there is no exciting scenery or variety in the altitude or gradient of terrain. What types of workouts could be good that doesn't require me to spend huge amounts on equipment. Even new sports that use similar muscles to cycling that can take a whole day would interest me.

Well as your more of an out-doors person (all gym machines are like the spinning bikes in that they exist in 4 walls, offer little technical variation as you tend to move only on two planes- forwards and backwards and it can become very repetative and dull).

I'd recommend running. Get yourself fitted for a decent pair of trainers and start. Aim for 1 min on, 1 min off for a while, try hill running, running backwards, find a park and sprint for 5 trees, walk for 3 and repeat.
You could also join running clubs or train for a marathon or group chairty run, many times as long as you raise a certain amount you are able to raise a certain amount you are often able to run without paying to do so.

Don't forget military fitness groups who will often have organised group circuits which are maybe something to aim for if your going back to fitness after a break.

And then there are teams you could join which play ball type games, everything from football (or soccer depending on where you live!) to tennis, basketball, ice hockey.... you could look for groups like these in your local gym, local library or college. If you are studying, many Unis or Colleges will have groups you can sign up to.

Or just buy a new bike! Maybe second hand but zone up on how to update and fix it online and it should work out cheaper then a brand new bike, but know how you feel- I used to cycle everywhere but I had my (locked) bike stolen one day when I out on my day off from work. Devastating as it was a very old thing- no use to anyone and I had been warned off it by bike specialists who said it was "a death trap". I still loved it though, was very sad when it was stolen and have not renewed it since (bikes in the UK get stolen at a stupidly high rate and the police do not take it seriously).

I agree with summer123. You can gradually start running again not by pushing yourself too hard. Try short intervals between running. You can definitely find cheap bikes for sale that will fit your budget so you can get back to cycling again.
