Good for you for taking action and seeking advice. There are many people here more qualified to give it. I just want to say Welcome! Probably you should start with what you can do as far as walks - even if its only 10 minutes at first. Do you have a double stroller for the toddlers? Anyway, you should save money by eating less and walking and water are free so no need to feel bad about the finances. The old advice about water is 8 glasses a day but some authorities think you don't need that much.

Woo Hoo congratulations on taking the first step Aloe is right...if you're just starting out start w walking. And every week try and increase by up to 5 minutes...Taking the kids out with you if you can #1 is a good way to get them moving #2 is an awesome way to role model the behavior you want them to partake in growing up and as adults.

8 is the rule of thumb, but if you are partaking in a work out routine you will need more. So when you wake up in the morning have a nice big glass of water to start off BEFORE you eat anything. Drinking at least 16oz of cold water 1st thing can help boost your metabolism by up to 24% :) I would also recommend buying 1L Nalgene or Aluminim water bottle and fill that up twice a day. 2L sounds like a lot of water, but it is actually the same as the recommended (8) 8-0z glasses of water.

Good luck, and again congratulations on taking that first step!

The International Sports Medicine Institute recommends that people drink half an ounce of water for every pound that they weigh. For someone weighing 285 pounds - that is 143 ounces of water. Naturally you can recalculate as you lose weight. This is the recommendation that I have long tried to follow.

Some people find it hard to manage (especially when we are bigger) - but our bodies do need to be adequately hydrated to prevent things like kidney stones and constipation among other things. Water is good for our skin too. Whatever you do drink - it is a good idea to look into the toilet bowl before you flush and check the colour of your urine. Pale is healthy - but dark or cloudy can indicate that you need to drink more water or it can indicate health problems.

It is possible to drink too much though - so if you have any doubt it can be a good idea to discuss it with your doctor.

Welcome to the forum!

My experience with losing weight has been that you need to make small, gradual changes that you can sustain- and then keep making changes slowly.

The most important thing to change is your food- without any other changes you'll see weight loss if you decrease your calorie intake. Have a look at your diet and see whether there's food you can safely cut out, or change for something that's lower calorie. Don't try to change everything at once- but make gradual healthier choices.

As a very rough guide, in temperate-cool climates drink 1.5 litres of water a day, and in warm climates at least 2 litres a day- but listen to your body. (And, as Omega said, the colour of your urine is also a good guide) It's certainly possible to drink too much- I find myself getting uncomfortable over four litres.

For walking (and exercise in general), do what you're comfortable with, or just a little more so that you build your endurance, and build it up gradually. If that's from one end of your house to the other, then do that. If it's a mile, then do that. That's something only you can judge.

At my start weight of 294 I was not dramatically different from you.

I lived on a crescent then and if I went around the semi circle and along the straight road to go around the block it was 0.6 miles. On day 1 I went out and walked that. I didnt care how fast it was. I paused a couple of times and sat on garden walls. I did it - and felt a sense of accomplishment.

I built it up from there. I decided to go out and do the same the next day - or further if I could.

Walking is a brilliant form of exercise.
