Need advice on running...

Hello Everyone,

My name is Amanda and just been looking for Professional runners to talk to. I am struggling with my running but I have to get it together for the Military my scholarship is riding on a PT test where i have to run 2 miles in 19 min. My 2 mile right now is broken where i have to walk some. And it is about 22-24 min. Sucks I know but i need help. Any thoughts????

When is your test, how long have you got?

When is the test? How long have you been training? How long can you sustain a continual jog?

A huge part of distance running is mental. To really be good at running anything over a mile you'll need to exercise your mine along with your body. Always keep a positive outlook on your runs. If you start to think negatively, try and turn those thoughts around to be positive. It takes practice but it will really help if you stay optimistic.

Hi Mandee!

First thing to do is to get some speed workout two days of the week, such as running an 800, 200, 300, 400, and 150. This will keep and raise your distance speed. Then go on a long run three days out of the week, like a 3-5 mile jog.

Good luck on your test!

Sandy

Depending on how much time you have, you are not that far away. 19 minutes for 2 minutes is not unreasonable for a young person, even for a rookie runner.

I recommend you continue to do what you've been doing; run as long and as hard as you can until you are breathless (about 160+ heart rate if you are using a heart rate monitor), stop running but continue running until you regain your breath (below 120 if using a heart rate monitor) and resume running again. Do this for 2 miles each day unless you are sore and then rest up. In short order, you will be able to accomplish your goal.

Keep at it

Do a majority of your runs at a pace where you can still hold a conversation. A couple days a week for a runs where you work on your speed. Something like warmup for 10 minutes, run fast for 1/4 mile, jog for 2 minutes, run fast for a 1/4 mile, jog easy for 2 minutes and do this say 4 to 6 times to work on your speed.
