Nail Biting...

While I have problems with my weight, I have a huge problem with nail biting. It's getting to the point where my fingers are ugly, and I'm embarrassed to have my hands out.

Any suggestions on how to quit this horrible habit?

Find something else to do with your hands...

Get a hobby that keeps you busy and get regular manicures - no matter what your gender)

Up untill about a month ago I had the same problem. While I was sitting at the computer I would just chew my nails and wouldn't even realize it. I stopped cold turkey but that may not work for everyone, they have creams or lotions you can put on your nails/fingers that make them taste horrid, although I don't know how they work, I've only read about them.

I've been a nail biter all my life - manicures helped some... and that nail stuff you put on to make them taste awful - doesn't so squat if you're a nail picker... which is what I moved over to...

manicures get rid of the rough edges and eliminite the scrappy things that are pickable...

:seeya: Boy, can I relate! I find that I don't chew them if I have nail polish on them.

I recently read in a flakey book (that I adore!) that nail biting can have to do with rage/anger at a parent. I have a terrific relationship with both my folks, but there was A LOT of stress in our home when I was growing up. I don't know if there is any reality to this in your case or not; but I found really working on forgiveness and being happy with my life has helped me to kick the habit! :smash:

Hope you find out what works for you,
ABBA

UPDATE: My nails now look like shite again. It has something to do with being married to an arse for the past 15 yrs and being stupidly determined to stick it out. Mind you, I would rather have short, ugly nails than all my fat again, so I guess it's not so bad. Regardless of your relationship with your parents (a la my flakey book), DON'T MARRY AN ARSE! That is my sage advice for helping get/keep long nails. hee hee

Man...... I bite my nails all the time. I know this needs to stop. I think i have to cover my nails with a mild spice to stop it. It's gettin kuite nasty man. I think you have to cover ur nails with something nasty and horrible tasting so that you dont feel like eating them.

What's your least favorite food? Ok, now paint your fingernails with something that tastes exactly like that. The next time you bite your nails...ICK...problem solved.

Chew gum, put bandaids on your fingers... My brother in law put that stuff on all his nails and fingertips that you can get to make kids stop sucking their thumbs. Also try tabasco.

I keep mine painted which seems to take care of the problem since I hate the look of chipped nail polish and part of my problem is that I bite them because I don't like the uneven coloring under the nail.

Former nail-biters, I have a question:
I think biting my nails through my younger years has caused me to have short nail beds, so even when I have lots of white at the end of my nails, they're barely coming off the tips of my fingers. It also makes french manicures look stupid since half my nail is white. Would not biting them for a significant amount of time lengthen the nail bed?

If anyone finds a cure lemme know! I am a notrious nail biter and it is on my top 10 goal list of things to do/stop doing! I notice hen they get longer that im more tempted to chew them especially if they arent painted. But keeping them nice neat and painted helps cur my nail appetite for a while, lol!

Is it that you don't realize when you start to bite them or do you know you're biting them and just can't stop?

If you don't realize you're doing it, try putting a dot of ink or something on the back of your hand for a week or two so when you look at it it reminds you not to bite them.

If you do realize it...I have no idea. But I agree that a manicure sounds like a really good way to stop it.

i used to bite my nails all the time. i tried that stuff that you put on them that makes them taste horrible, although i can't remember what it's called now, but that just caused me to stop biting them, so then i just picked at them constantly.

i eventually got fake nails put on at a salon for a high school dance, which was the only time i didn't bite or pick at my nails...9 years later, i still have fake nails. it stopped me from biting and picking at them, but $25 every two or three weeks is an expensive remedy for some people.

I've been trying to stop for a while. I'm now looking at unbitten fingernails. First time in a long while.

I don't know what caused me to stop, but I still occasionally go to bite them and have to stop myself. My one pinky is the onyl nail thats been chewed on. It just looks so much better. So hopefully I can keep it up.

I don't really bite my nails, but I pick on the skin around them, so the sides of my fingers and the area around them looks really horrible, and more often than not, sore and even bloody. I do it when I'm stressed, mainly, and don't even realise it until it's very sore and hurts.

I tried keeping myself busy with something else, but pretty often I don't even know when I did it, I just pick something up, look at my hands and see what I've done....no idea when I did it. Maybe dipping them in Tabasco or something equally unpleasant would help, but somehow the idea of putting Tabasco on broken skin doesn't sound all that appealing to me....*lol*
