My story....need advice

A year ago I started feeling bad with chest pains. Went through every procedure under the sun and could not find anything. So I talked my cardiologist into doing a heart cath. He found 50% blockage in an artery and put a stent in just because he was already there. He told me at the time that he did not think that was causing my problems. He was right. Chest pains continued until I got on Lexapro. It was all being caused by stress.

Anyway, the whole ordeal got me serious about my cardio health. I quit smoking. I now walk 3 miles a day, 4 to 5 days a week, on my treadmill. I watch everything I eat for fat and cholesterol content. I have eaten fast food twice in a year.

At first I was losing weight because of the new diet and exercise. I went on vacation at the beach and for a week splurged on food that I should not have.

Immediately came back and got on track and am having a horrible time shaking the weight.

Typical day:

Breakfast - Banana or cereal bar

Lunch - 2 bowls of cheerios (no sugar) or bowl of Campbells Healthy Request Soup, fat free crackers, water or green tea.

Snack - Banana or Pretzel Sticks

Dinner - Spaghetti and salad with reduced fat dressing or Baked chicken with vegetable and rice or Oatmeal and whole weat toast.

I do drink 2 bottles of red wine on the weekend, usually, and I eat chicken fajitas on Friday night.

What am I doing wrong here?

Are you keeping track of your calories?

2 bottles of red wine is quite big chunk of calories to be consumed...

I'd get an account at and accurately measure everything you put in your mouth.

It's still total calories consumed in a day that contribute to weight loss or gain... fat free doesn't mean calorie free....

No. I have not been counting calories. I have been more concerned with cholesterol levels for better cardio health. Now I am interested in achieving both.

Thanks

Each bottle of red wine is about 600 calories. What you are eating amounts to a bunch of starches (cereals, pasta, banana). If you are eating two full bowls of Cheerios, that's 600 calories there (if you have less milk than most folks do). Are you eating the skin on the baked chicken?

If you really want to get a handle on things you need to start counting calories. Also, it would be a good thing for you to get more of your calories through non-starchy foods such as vegetables (spinach, carrots, broccoli), fruits (citrus). Just because the food label says "No Cholesterol" doesn't mean you should eat a bunch of it.

Can you lift weights? Having muscle burns fat.
Check with your doctor to see if you can and then if he/she says it is ok, I'd start lifting (light weights at first).

Also looking at what you are eating, I don't think you are eating enough. The wine is taking up a lot of your calories, I'd cut that out completley. You can get the benefits w/o it as long as you eat properly.

Started counting last night and I am now more aware of my calorie count. I will also be wary of starchy foods

My main concern is cholestoral level and then weight. One being life or death and the other being vanity.

But I do see what you gays are saying and it makes good sense.

The wine is staying though. :hurray:

Cholesterol & body fat go hand in hand as far as health, IMO. Excessive body fat is not good for health. Lean (white meats), fruits, veggies, healthy fats will all be OK on a cholesterol level. So it will take care of itself.

Congrats on the life style change.
