MY pc problem

I read the other computer prob thread down below, and although my prob is similar, I do have a few distinctions:

Facts:
~My pc is soooo slow - I have HSI and even that is slow
~My hubby has his own profile - he views sites (read: porn) that I do not on my "side" of the pc

Actions already taken:
~Defragmented
~Ran NoAdware
~Deleted Temp internet files, hx and cookies

Questions:
~How can I figure out what exactly is running when I start up and how can I modify it?
~Is there anything else I can do?
~By doing what I have done above on my profile, will it also work on his profile, or do I need to run the NoAdware/Defrag. again under his?

TIA for ur help.

I would run adware under both profiles, since they each have there own start up script. How many items do you have in the task bar in the bottom right corner? I user Ad-Aware and Spybot, both find different things. Another program to keep updated is Anti-Virus.

If you are using XP you can hit ctrl-alt-del, choose task manager, and use the applications and processes tabs to look at what you have running. Bear in mind you may need to google some of the things there as they won't always be named in clear ways.

I'm also with Jim, make sure your virus defs are current, and why is "ran a virus scan" not in that list? If you do not have a virus scanner do a search for AVG free and install it.

If your hard drive is kind of full , your comp may take a while to do things. tell your husband to stop downloading porn and delete them.

To see what programs load up behind the scenes on your computer;

RUN > msconfig > startup

If you do not know what a service does or means, for an example "sgtray", google the name and click on the first available site for reference. Simply uncheck the things you do not need. (**make sure your COMPUTER, not YOU doesn't need it. A simple uncheck of a vital component can possibly fry your entire motherboard - I learned this the hard way, you don't have to**)

Next, post your system specifications for us. Knowing your current setup could really help us out. However, since I've helped out a lot of people in your situation, the problem could almost 90% of the time be solved by a simple RAM upgrade. In any case, post your system specs please.

And how the hell do I find those??? LOL

I did the msconfig thing and was able to uncheck a few things. I will run the NoAdware thing when I log off for the night. I will do everything again tomorrow for my hubby's profile. One more question:

Can some programs appear on his "side" and not show up on mine? For ex. if I go to add/remove programs on his "side" could it show programs that I do not have on my "side"??

Thanks guys for your help.

Nice to see you back , Nobody.

Wendy:

The time that you invest doing what they ask in the FAQ is WORTH it. It's absolutely free, and they help everyone.

Here are more things you could do.

1) My computer>Local disk. Delete everything you don't want/need that are not in the Windows folder.
2)If you have Windows XP, you can also (if you don't care about the visuals) right click on My computer. Then go to properties. On top there are tabs, click on advanced. In the performance section, click settings. Check custom. Then uncheck everything in the boxes below. If you like the Windows XP look don't uncheck the last one.
3)Go to add/remove programs. Remove all programs you do not use or want.
4)Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. This may take awhile for it to finish searching. When it is done, check everything and ok. The final part may take long as well.

Note: A lot of "porn" sites will have viruses and stuff within the downloads, pop ups, etc. You may want to be careful of that. Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If you see a lot of weird process, google them to see what they are. If they are something bad, there should be stuff on how to remove them on google. Also, try not to run too many programs at once.

You could try downloading hijackthis:

Run the scan.. it shows all running programs. most hidden ones as well.
You can select the ones that are clearly not ones you use and "fix".

Again, you all have a wealth of info. I will be putting these tings to use. :) Thanks!

No, doing this without knowing which file is which could seriously **** up your computer. Most of the things hijackthis logs are things that you want to work. The best thing to do is post your hijackthis log onto a site like I provided...their helpers will point out which ones you need to fix and which you should leave alone.

But yeah, Hijackthis is a great program, you just gota know what you're doing.
