My next car.

Ok time to buy another car. Anybody want to give some recommendations? Looking for a simple car and something with better mileage.

I don't know what type of cars are good in IL weather because I live in TX, but Toyotas and Nissans are always dependable and usually have good gas mileage as long as you dont get a truck/SUV/sports vehicle. Try one of those ugly smart cars. or one that is 1/2 electric and 1/2 gas.

Toyota is good but not the tundra. I am not sure on cold weather cars as I live in San Diego where we get 5 inches rain a year!!!

If you have the means, I'd stongly recommend that at some point in your life you indulge in owning a Ferrari. Besides, who can say your kid will want to go to college? :D

I don't know why....but I really like those spunky little cars made by Scion, Toyota, Mazda, etc....they look like mini SUV's and they're lower to the ground. Great mileage, versatility and relatively safe. Just depends on what your needs are....you could provide us with a few more details.

As you well know, lots of people hate on Fords, and American cars in general. It makes it even easier to make fun now that all Big 3 are broke as ****...well Ford is close.

Anyways, I have owned 4 cars, 2 were Ford products, a 91 Lincoln Mark VII and an 89 Ford Ranger. The Lincoln was baller as hell, loved that car. The 89 Ranger, got for $1,100, lasted 3 years and the biggest repair was exhaust. I'm a firm believer that if you do the simple things, oil and filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, plug wires, you are giving even an old car good chances.

Skip to now, I have a 98 Accord, got it with super low miles, it's still only up to 43,000. It's a nice car, cost a shatload, but I think it was worth it, and has been reliable. So I also put in a vote for Honda, specifically Accords. My neighbor swears by them, especially early 90s Accords if you are shoppin on a strict budget.

I love Mercedes; the A class is a good buy as it’s pretty cheap second hand.
If you have the money to pay a little more when you buy the car you’ll end up saving yourself a heap of cash in the long run in maintenance costs (Unless you also have a girlfriend who finds it possible to drive into inanimate things like car park walls)

If you want reliable then go German

If it’s any consolation, dealers are in an awful position right now and you could negotiate a huge reduction from the ticket price. I read a story in the newspapers over here of a dealer offering ‘buy one get one free’ deals on Dodge cars as they just weren’t shifting

I heard about that from a coworker...that's nuts!

I'd buy a Honda. very good, well made vehicles, and they aren't seconds away from bankrupcy like most of the US car makers are.

Honda Civics get wicked mileage, but if you get the sporty model, they look nice and still have some power on the hiway.

Or those Smart Cars are only around $10,000 and change...but they are 'in town' cars. I knwo a few owners that say they suck over 60mph...and its such a high compression engine you can only run premium fuel.

And thats why I am thinking of moving up to a different car. I drive a Cobalt right now and while it's a fun car that has some get up and looks nice it's frankly too small for me. My trunk is near full of items for work, fire department, ect. so I am looking for something with more space there and 4 doors. Dealers are offering STEEP discounts on lots of vehicles. I am looking at a trailblazer at the moment and immediately am getting $4000 off the sticker for the red tag sales event....plus even more discounts.

my boss is looking to trade in his dodge ram with the hemi for a diesel...dealer immediately offered a $10k drop off the sticker.

Funny thing about those "cars" (if you can call them cars, they're more like glorified golf-carts!)....you'd think they'd get 80+mpg or better, but they really don't get better mileage then some of these real cars, I think they're coming-in around 38mpg or just a bit better. Ridiculous! I had some friends who had a spiffy little VW Jetta turbo-diesel, it sat 5, handled great and had all the features of a regular car, but being a diesel, it got 52mpg on the highway and about 38 in the city. They made too much sense, so of course they weren't imported into Calif. and the line shortly disappeared.

who the hell can afford a ferrari? then if you can buy one what idiot would drive it in the winter time?

BSL you need to share the wealth. :costumed6:

We don't have much of a "winter" here in SoCal :)

Share the wealth? You mean a redistribution to those who don't want to work, those who are too lazy to work or those who didn't bother going to school or pursuing a vocation that pays well? Ah yes....I believe president-elect Obama is working hard towards taking from the successful to subsidize the lazy.

Dude....there ain't no "free" in Fer-rar-i ;)

Some years ago I bought a '97 355 Spider (used) for $90k and it only had 2,900 miles on it (very common as exec's buy these things as trophy cars and then hardly drive 'em)....I had no problems and aside from spending $80 to have more air-conditioning freon pumped into the system, the car operated flawless. Loved it. About 18 months later, with some 7,000 miles on it...I sold it for $91,800

Did I make money? Of course not...I was still "out" the registration, taxes and what-not...BUT, to it's credit, the car held it's value and even appreciated a hint. Show me a BMW, Mercedes or any car that would do that??? My wife had her heart set on one of those small sporty Jag's....Good Lord, you buy it for $78k and in a year it's worth $54k, then another year $43k, then $37k, $22k....down down down. You buy a used Ferrari in good shape and take care of it, it can hold value very well...and even if it needs some service, the cost of that service won't be as much as the depreciation on other vehicles (as sited above).

No...I'm not suggested the OP buy a Ferrari...but I am serious about one thing....if at some point in your life you have the means, it's DEFINITELY one of the most rewarding and fun experiences!

OP....go to a dealership and buy a leased-returned Toyota, Honda or something practical. It's really sad that I can't recommend an American make, but when it comes to small, reliable and well-made inexpensive cars, the Ragin' Asians have the market pretty well sewn-up!

And hey..with the money you save, you can buy a fishing boat, join a fishing forum and discover the joys of tying tiny knots with numb-cold fingers! :D

Someone just contacted me about a '92 camry le 4 cylinder w/135,000 miles for $1250. What do you think?
