Hey all-

New member here. Here's the deal. I'm a 25 year-old guy who has put on some mega weight since high school. Well, a lot in my eyes anyway. Graduated high school about 180 pounds. Since then, my metabolism has slowed and I am not nearly as active as I used to be. I've shot up to 221.5 (as of this morning). I've decided enough is enough. With heart disease and other cardiovascular issues in my family, I'd rather lose the weight now and maintain a healthy diet than live a fat, unhealthy life. I don't have any particular diet in mind, but I figure with regular exercise and cutting out all fast food and soda is a good way to start. My goal is get back to where I was!

you've taken the first step (which is always the hardest), so congrats! keep it up and you'll definitely see results. and don't forget we are always here for support and motivation. =)

oh yeah, welcome to the site! lol

Welcome aboard Chris! You pretty much summed up the issues. Do something about it now - or face an unhealthy shorter life. Regular exercise combined with cutting out junk foods and drinks is a pretty good first step. There is lots on this site and across the Internet as a whole that you can learn about good nutrition, healthy living, getting more active etc. This place is great for support. If you were thinking about starting a diary, consider starting an online diary thread on this site.

Start setting yourself targets - not too big at first, just sensible. When you reach that, then you set a new target. Be very wary of using scales too much, it really is frightingly addictive, and can be off putting when you see your daily weight going up and down. Start exercise at an appropriate pace. Walking is often a good place to start - maybe growing into jogging when your fitness improves - and it will improve if you really want it to.

Consider eating more fibre - especially earlier in the day - and combine that with drinking more water. The effect will be improved digestion, health - and it will really help block any hunger. Speaking of hunger, you might be surprised at how much healthy food you can actually eat in a day - quite often, its not so much a case of eating too much, as eating the wrong kind of foods.

Good luck and stay with it!

Thanks for the welcome. I started today by eating a grilled chicken salad for lunch with fat free dressing. Followed that up this afternoon eating some grapes, apple slices, and watermelon as a snack. This is very tough for me because my girlfriend who I have been living with for quite some time, works at Outback Steakhouse so she always brings home food for dinner after her shift. I told her today, the only thing she is allowed to bring home for me now is the 9oz sirloin and steamed veggies :)

Thats the spirit Chris...

Its about breaking bad habits and developing new tastes. I know see junk food as 'evil'. I'm lucky, in that I seemed to have found great motivation over the past four months - I don't really know even where it came from! It takes time, but keep at it, and your palate will change. I really am amazed how I have coped - I don't really crave fatty sugary food much these days. Yesterday at work, some of the guys cooked up the most evil meal ever thought of - the full English breakfast - bloke size, with fried fatty bacon, sausages, bread, eggs etc. I just sat there and scorned - then went upstairs and thoroughly enjoyed my healthy food - a scrumptious low fat live yoghurt with added banana, seeds and nuts - delicious!

The last four months have gone so fast - I now enjoy being active, going swimming, running with the dog, playing with the kids, I have even joined a gym, and I'm starting on weights. The old me would have never have dreamed of doing things like that! When I go for a cycle ride - its great when I get that buzz.

Go for it mate - it is worth it.

Man, these first couple of days have been tough. I am used to gorging myself and I really limited my portions. Hopefully my stomach shrinks down a little bit.
