My first half marathon a success

Well I did it! It was a beautiful day today, the weather was perfect, the energy was high and positive. I ran my first half in 1.53 (8:42 minute/mile). Now, let me explain. My goal was to just go out and enjoy the day. When the gun went off the crowd of about 8000 runners slowly crept along. I was a little concerned at first at the slow start but figured as runners began to spread out I'd pick up my pace. Well, that finally happened at around mile 4 when the marathoners went off to race their course. Phew, I was free to finally move a little quicker. And I did.... umm, but just a little. So, I guess I didn't really push too hard... but you know what? I felt damn good!! I felt no pain whatsoever, my breathing was perfect, I was singing to the tunes of my ipod and life at that moment was perfect. So I told myself, why change this? Today wasn't about winning (I mean I already knew there was no chance of that), it wasn't about being in pain, it wasn't about pushing myself so hard I'm not walking upright tomorrow, nope, for me it was truly about enjoying every second of the experience...and I did! So, to sum it up, I'm walking pain free, I played baseball with my 14 year old after race, went to the golf course and had a beer (yup, It was deserving) and I'm happy. Could I have pushed it more?, yes, absolutely, do I regret it? not really (okay maybe just a tiny bit) but I had a great time! So, next year its the full marathon and who knows maybe, just maybe I'll run that one just like I did today, just to simply enjoy the experience...ummm, but with a little more "push". I promise!:D

Anyone have any suggestion for good trail running shoes. I have Nikes at the moment and I don't care for them. I wear asics for road running but have yet to find a good trail shoe. I have a nuetral foot.

I'm still feeling great after doing the half yesterday. I wasn't sure what my body would feel like the next day but I feel fine. Going out for a nice long trail run tomorrow and i can't wait!

Congratulations on your first half! What an awesome achievement!

I use New Balances for trail running. I think they are 790s, but I also have some low end 474s which I continue to like a lot!

Awesome job!! Don't worry about whether you could've gone faster. You finished it, you know what it's about, and your next one can be for speed if you like. Congrats!!

Thanks tsi. I'm already scoping the web looking for the next half!! I loved it. I do have one question. I lift weights about 3-4 times per week. I lift pretty heavy (bench press, power cleans, bent over rows, dead lift etc.). I have the kind of body where if I run too much or do too much cardio I do tend to lose weight. I weigh about 110 lbs now and am about 5 feet two inches. Last year I lifted but lifted relatively light and was definitely doing more cardio. I felt fine but people started asking me if I was sick and now looking back at pics I did look sick. Sorry, here's the question. does anyone have a weight specific program for runners or is the ripptoe program appropriate for me. Focus suggested that program and I do like it and I feel like I'm making gains as far as lifting heavy but I'm wondering if lifting like that will affect speed etc. with running. I'm open to suggestion. Thanks!:sport:

Yeah... that's the problem with running. This is definitely not my department but I bet someone else will have some good advice.
