Warning: If you don't love cats, you won't get this, it will seem oversentimental and emotional. I don't care, at my age, I've (mostly) gotten over the need to be macho and can say that I love my cat dearly. Hell, after 13 years of devotion, and cuteness, she's sort of like a furry little daughter to me.... anyhow, read on.

My cat, Nadine, who is 13 years old must have a fistful of angels watching over her. I only wish I was as lucky.
There were some contractors working in the house that really freaked her out. I'm used to her hiding amid chaos and loud noises, but I haven't seen her since Monday. (Today is thursday, for those of you reading this at a later date)
Somehow (I think it was my fault, but might have been the contractors... who cares...) I'm pretty sure she ran out the back door and escaped.
Needless to say, I was worried about her. I rescued her as a kitten, and at 13 years of age, an indoor cat getting out is very, very, very bad. I thought I had heard hear calling from time to time, but only one meow once in a while, and with my ear infection and wheezing from a cough that I have now, I still can't say for certain that it was her or my imagination.
But today, apparently she had enough of hunger and boredom, and she started meowing over and over again when I called her name. I called out her name again, and she recognized me, since there was sort of a pause. Instantly, I just instinctive knew she was out the back and under the porch. I ran inside as fast as I could to get a can of food to lure her out, praying the whole time that she would sit still and not run off.
Luckily, there she was, hiding in the corner, under the porch. For an outside cat, this would be a dream playhouse, but my baby was just sitting there scared, meowing.
So I called out, "Nadine".... meow.. meow..... nothing....
Then I opened the can.. a reaction... I had her attention but still nothing, just sitting in the corner meowing, with her skittish instinicts still in charge.
"Nadine, Nadine, come on Nadine, I've got food....." Nothing, just more meowing, when a thought occured to me.
I grabbed a small glob of food, and flung in under the porch, in hopes that the smell would make her want to come get more.... but.,.. crap..... I aimed too high, and it stuck to the underside of my porch. (I though to myself.. "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKING KIDDING ME!") So... the next glob landed way too close (you try through a glob of food while lying on your belly!) but the third one landed much closer to my kitty. Sure, I was worried that it would hit her and scare her off, but what was I to do?
After the third glob landed closer to her, her meows paused, then a few more quieter, friendlier meows, then a step, then three steps, then, she came for the food!!!!!!!!!!
I let her enjoy a few large mouthfuls of food before I grabbed her and brought her in the house. Taking a chance at grabbing her immediately would have been bad, as most cat owners know. She had to relax a minute, get comfortable with the situation, otherwise her instincts would kick in again, and she'd run off. But, oh yes, I do know my cats! yes I do!
So, I brought her in the house, lap in my arms, head over my shoulder.
I brought her into my bedroom, into the the bathroom to eat a bit more, and then she sniffed the room, and came over to say "thank you, daddy".
She's never really been much of a lap cat, prefering to say hello for a minute or two at a time, then run off. (I call her a hit-and-run cat). But today, I knew she was truly thankful for being rescued again because she sat with me and stayed with me for about 1/2 hour.
This is the sort of thing that really makes having a cat like her worth having.
While I wish she never would have escaped, having her show me appreciation and love for bringing her back in the house is priceless.

Glad you got your kitty back!!!

Mine are pure house cats, so when one escaped shortly after I moved here, I feared the worst. She was gone for 3 days, and I didn't get any sleep in those nights. During the third night I must have drifted off, because I remember waking up and hearing my cat. My husband claimed there was nothing, and when I went to the window and listened, there wasn't a meow to be heard. I insisted I had heard her and went downstairs, and low and behold, she was sitting in front of the back door. Shot inside as soon as I opened the door. She was a couple of lbs lighter than before, and looked a little straggly, but no injuries.

So yeah, I can understand how you felt about yours disappearing. As said, good to hear she decided to come back. :)

Oh my goodness! I'm glad Nadine is safe. She must have been starving by then!

Here's my baby. His name is Mateo. He's 11yrs old. Ragdoll Breed.

Awww...poor kitty. I've had a couple cats get loose and run away....and was heartbroken for quite a while over both of them, for myself and my kids.

Glad your kitty is home safe! :)

My cat only had one life. And it was taken when my mom had her put down. That dirty bitch.

...

...

...my mom, not the cat.

Hmmm... I gues.s... maybe...... .I'll see what I can do.
..............
I guess I forgot to mention the other times that she might have lost her other lives... lol....
Let's see....
1) when I rescued her as a feral kitten.
2) When I was moving, it was right around 4th of July, and I was living in the city (a small city), still, lots of noise from the fireworks spooked her. She hid for a few days. I don't know if I'd consider this a lost life, but ... what the heck, since I was moving I sort of thought she escaped, as the door was left open while I moving my stuff. (yeah, moving stuff around and a lot of commotion tends to spook kitties)
3) I left a window open and she couldn't get back in. I was living in the city. A few hours after she escaped (I think) I found her still sitting on the window sill, scared.
So.. I guess she has about 5 lives left. Seriously, G-d must really love this kitty!

glad you found her! we have 2 kittys, one siamese and one oriental (its the same breed, siamese is the white with blue eye colour though).
My boy Siamese loves once got locked out, hes also meant to be an indoor kitty, and he did the opposite to most indoor cats. At first he paniced, then he realized (in his infinate kitten wisdom) that actually the outdoors was just a MUCH larger playground. We got home and he was outside the lounge, we hadn't lost him, but it gave him a taste for the wild.
Now whenever any one leaves a door or window open, hes diving for it. Before we would leave lounge doors open and he would play in the yard, but never go any further, now its not like that. Tried a electric zappy collar (tested on myself first - extremely mild) but he enjoyed the buzz. Now we just keep him indoors and he wears a bright red harness with a large name Label that says "Ichabod - Likes to Escape" with our number on in case he gets out :D

I LOVE that name "Ichabod" !!!! great name for a cat.
Wow... that really cracked me up about how your cat enjoyed the electric collar.

It was time...for my mom to be a MURDERER!!!

WHY, MOMMY, WHY?!?!?!
I'm really not sure what to make of this. So.. I'll let Dr. McCoy articulate my feelings:

I grew up with cats, dogs and fishes around the house. Few months ago I dreamt my dog has a car accident and I woke up crying. After that, I make sure my gate is always locked.

I had a kitty called Minou. she was an outdoor cat and got hit by cars 3 times (separate occasions, duhhh). She was like the bionic kitty. Metal plates in her head, hips, legs.

Hey, guys... let me take a second to advise you to make sure that if you have a big dog, to make sure you use a seat-belt for it while your driving, for YOUR protection.
If you get into a wreck, a large dog right behind you could easily paralyze or kill you. Since I never had a dog before this one, I never really thought of that way, I just thought the owners were being overprotective.

Monster is right.
Big or small your pet should be either in a carrier or in a special seat belt.
We always had our Golden Retriever in a dog seat belt. It was for both her protection and our protection.

I don't know how many people I've seen behind the wheel with their dogs in their laps....

That is a seriously bad way to drive. You might as well be texting.
The same is true with cats, since we're talking about it.
Cats just LOVE to hide under the seats.
Heaven help you if it decides to jump down (or crawl out) to where your gas and brake pedals are.

We always keep our black lab in the boot of our car. Don't think he'd sit still long enough to have a seat belt on! Although I hate seeing people with dogs on their lap..Or dogs with their heads out the window--They are just asking for trouble :(
