Is there anything in particular that he needs to train for for his position in the team? Speed, strength etc?

If your boy wants to start strength training then it would be best to work on his form right now rather than hit anything heavy. Look into compound lifts like squats, deadlifts and military press and use very light weights at first to make sure he gets his technique perfect at a young age so once puberty kicks into full gear and he starts to get a lot stronger then he'll be well set to start upper the weights a little

Have your son do bodyweights exercises like pushups, squats, floor cobras, lunges, pullups, situps and the like. He can also do agility drills using a ladder or rope for foot quickness.
