Muscle Milk Light and Workout Questions a plenty...

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and I have a few questions regarding the protein powder Muscle Milk Light and some general fitness questions as well. First off I am 20 years old, 6'4" 215 lbs and a college pitcher. While I stay in fairly athletic shape there is some work to be done on toning my overall look. In January a body composition test said I have 11% body fat.

While that may not seem too bad it is frustrating for me when I look at the time I put into working out. I have tried numerous types of programs, mixing different body parts to focus on each day to isolating a single part of my body each day. While I know since my diet is not as ideal as I am sure it should be I have recently received money for part time work that will allow me to buy the more expensive, healthier groceries.

Therefore I have started to investigate the use of protein such as Muscle Milk, which fellow team mates use. I still have some questions about it though. Please keep in mind I am wanting to use this product to reduce body fat and tone the overall appearance of my body.

1. Will MML help improve my core (abdominal) strength?
2. When and how many times a day would I take MML?
3. Are there any other products I should take corresponding to MML?
4. Will the results of taking MML go away and back to how I started if I discontinued taking the supplement?
5. Would MML reduce the recovery time of not only lifting but other activites such as pitching in games?

Thank you for your time. Also I have found a web page with great exercises for each body part, if you have a suggestion as to how I should group the parts I should lift at a certain time that would be greatly appreciated.

don't look at MML...look at the rest of your diet. 11% is fine but if you want to keep up single digit body fat (for the washboard abs I'm guessing) then you need to clean up your diet. Adding a shake like MML is not gonna help you lose fat unless you're replacing a larger calorie meal with a lower calorie shake.
just taking protein shakes doesn't make you magically lose fat.

that said, the original muscle milk tastes good, but has way too much fat and carbs for a 'protein powder'.
I'm a strong proponent of Nitrean from becuase its a blend of whey and casien, which research has shown to be superior to 100% whey. It also tastes good and uses the type of sweetner I like, as well as being much lower in fat that Muscle Milk.

to directly answer your questions:
1. are you serious? does steak improve your core strength? neither does MML. its JUST protein.
2. no more than 2 protein shakes a day, unless you like sitting on the toilet for hours. one shake should be immediately after resistence training.
3. no. supplements are NEVER necessary. if they were, they'd be called 'requireds' not 'supplements'.
4. again, MML is just protein. its no different than eating a steak. so the question should be "If I don't maintain my protein intake will I lose my gains?" no, because your goal is fat loss. if you ditched MML and didn't replace it with anything, you'd be consuming fewer calories a day.
5. to a degree yes, because protein rebuilds damaged tissues in the body. but how much of a degree will depend on whether you were already taking in enough protein to repair all the tissue in a normal timeframe. if that was the case, you won't really see any change in your performance.

Thank you for the feedback... Sorry for the rediculous questions, I really don't know much about the protein world. I just wanted to start to use something so I had ability to gain more muscle and it is hard reading all the sites because each person has a different favorite or protein of choice. I know my roomie uses Muscle Milk and said it worked well for him so that is why I was asking about that. I like the Nitrean you referred too, sounds to be a solid product and unlike MML I could get a whole months worth rather than two weeks worth for that price. Thanks again!

I drink 3 protein shakes a day 2 servings in each shake of muscle tech nitro-tech hardcore protein and I'm not stuck on the toilet. In fact, I only go once a day and i'm a quick well you know.

good for you tomahawk. still doesn't change the fact that whole food is better than a shake. hands down. period.

MUCGuy...those aren't ridiculous questions...they just stem from you not yet being educated on supplements, and thus buying into their marketing hype a little too deeply.

We ALL go through that. I've tried a LOT of supps out there over the last 15 years. Most were hype...a few worked.

You need more fiber then.

I'm with Malk. There are a lot of decent and good protein products out there that is cheaper than MML. It's a pretty popular product, we could never get it ordered into our store because universities were buying it in bulk.

All I have to say is that if you're looking to improve you performance, focus on your hips and lower body. Get your legs as strong as you can. I don't know if you knew, but The Rocket, Roger Clemens takes protein supplements to help him in his muscle gain. but like I said, focus on your lower body and work on your conditioning. Muscle Milk Light is fine to use in your diet, just watch whatever else you're eating.
