Muscle Mass

Just a quick question, this summer i've been putting in as much resistance training as cardio, and i can definitly see the differences already, but as far as weight loss goes in the past 3 weeks i've only lost about 4 lbs. not that im complaining, but is muscle mass gained really that significant in 3 weeks? or am i just kidding myself and not losing weight as quickly? :p

note that i've taken it very seriously, and can already tell differences in my body, muscle mass wise. I know I shouldn't look at the scale if im adding on muscle, but even if I do have muscle mass there is still a weight I wanna be under, so im aiming for that.

Muscle gain requires a calorie excess, fat loss, a defeceit.
Just over 1lbs a week is not bad.

Yes, but your body isn't a simple in-out machine. It's very complex and losing fat & building muscle at the same time is definitly not something that is impossible for the body to do... im just asking, if its results that I can physically see on my person, does that mean that I've maybe lost more than 4 lbs and the added weight is the new muscle mass? or is it too soon after 3 weeks?

... Steve? lol.

It's not impossible to lose fat and gain muscle mass simultaneously; it's just very rare, and even when it does occur, it doesn't last very long. Losing a pound a week is very respectable in any case, and unless you are exremely obese, I wouldn't try for much more than that, anyway.

I've been doing heavy weight training for six straight months, and have increased strength significantly -- but I have not increased my muscle mass at all I know, because I've also been taking detailed measurements during that whole time. My squats, for example, went from 120 lbs. to 220 lbs., almost a 100% increase, but the size of my thighs and calves stayed exactly the same.

Also, as you get closer to your ideal weight, it will be harder and harder to lose. Your body will fight you for every ounce.

Correct.

In fact, for those that are new to training and / or have higher levels of fat, losing some fat & building some muscle at the same time can be a very common occurance. However, that said, even for those just starting out, losing a ' significant ' amount of fat and muscle at the same time is extremely difficult if not impossible - depending of course on how you define ' significant ' and how much time you're taking about to pull it off . :)

You said earlier that " the past 3 weeks i've only lost about 4 lbs " followed up by " I've maybe lost more than 4 lbs and the added weight is the new muscle mass " .

Want to make sure I understand you correctly. You've been training for 3 weeks now. You want to know if it's possible if perhaps during that time you've gained something like 1.5 lb. - 3 lbs. of muscle in 3 weeks. And, if during that time, you also might of lost somewhere between 5.5 lbs - 7 lbs of fat at the same time.

So, within both ranges, the combo of fat loss and muscle gain would net out to a' net loss ' of weight ( net fat and muscle ) of 4 lbs.

Is that what you're wondering ?

Yea, just wanted to know how much muscle mass I could realistically gain in 3 weeks time? At this point im a pro at weight loss lol, thats not what im concerned about anymore, this is the first time i've taken resistance training seriously though so I just wanted to get a little more educated on the topic.
