Weight-Loss Multivitamins? Good/Bad/Do Nothing?

I am a very picky eater and I am sure I don't eat as healthily as I should in terms of getting the correct nutrition, enough veggies, and very little calcium.

My mother always says 'you should be taking a multivitamins'

Are multivitamins helpful? Or do they really do nothing?

If they are good, what are the best ones to take?

And yes I know that eating better would probably be the best option and I try but it's hard and if a multivitamin would be helpful, then that would be a plus.

But I don't want to spend money on something that's pointless.

Thanks!

Hi MysticRealm, I can relate to your predicament. As for answering your question I can say that no-one has a perfectly balanced diet and as such it would be recommended that you take supplements to fill those nutritional gaps. Most multivitamin tablets don't do much because of the synthetic materials used to make it... in other words, your body does not effectively absorb those nutrients that may in fact be present in the tablet! In any case, the best type of supplements are those that focus on phytonutrients as these are plant-based derivatives that you need in your diet. What I suggest is you take a very potent phytonutrient based vitamin as your body can easily absorb these natural nutrients. I'm actually an online retailer in healthcare products and a fitness enthusiast myself and what I can at least recommend to you is a couple of different vitamins that you literally FEEL the difference when you use them! I take One A Day Women's Active Metabolism. I used to take the version of Weight Loss but I don't see it out on the shelves anymore to purchase so I switched over. I believe the Weight Loss one helped me lose weight better however the new one works, it's just slower. I think it helps my digestive system to circulate quicker. I tend to go to the bathroom more often when I first started taking them. Now its a struggle. (Sorry for the gross part) But when I did start on them it appeared to help. I believe they are around $8 at the grocery store. I don't think they are over $10. You get like 70 pills. So maybe the same will help for you!

Even though I agree with some of what Daniel said, I unfortunately had to delete most of his posts because he was spamming. That being said, I don't think you have anything to lose by taking a daily mulitvitamin, just don't get sucked into something overly expensive. And avoid using it as an excuse to not eat properly. One that I use is made by Natural Factors...Their head office is in BC, but they may sell across Canada... not too sure.

Exactly! I would not depend on the multivitamin as a cheat to get your nutrients and not eat healthy. Stick with the pyramid for best results!

Thanks guys! I do agree with trying to eat more healthy and I do try, it's just hard for me with how picky I am. I am quite picky about textures. Apples and grapes need to be hard, not soft, and kept very cold in the fridge or I don't like them, tomatoes are all soggy and gross, peppers are crunchy and ew, haha. It's a tough life! I will look at trying to find a natural multivitamin!

Hi Mystic - yup- a natural multivit sounds like a good idea...

~ I'm a pretty picky eater myself too ( can't handle mashed potatoes/ or beans-lentils - the "lumps/gritty texture" can actually make me gag...eek>)

~ I also like the idea of blending your own fresh smoothie to get some vitamins in ....(Dr.Oz seems to have "drinks" on his show all the time )_ - bit of work to toss together...but then you'll know for sure you are getting vitamin/nutrients .

~ our dietician at work gave me this recipe recently ( haven't tried it yet myself )- but am thinking it might be a good way to get more fruit & veggies into my daily routine.. ( am thinking to add these to my grocery list this week & give it a try )....( I think all that fibre will probably be really filling too).

Health smoothie ( just toss in blender & puree really well)...(recommended - 8 oz.- 1 cup daily ).

-celery

-chard

-carrotts

-lemon

-apple

-radish

-broccoli
