multi-vitamin

i was taking multi-vitamins for a few years cause i heard they aided in workin out. i stopped takin for a few months and started takin them again. i was going cheap and gettin the wal-mart brand. they were upsetting my stomach the second time around so i threw them away. my mother said she had the same problem and it was from the zinc??

do they really help or is it just a myth, and if so which one would be safe so me to take.

For most people, it is beneficial, but often not completely necessary. It is almost a staple for me, but you could theoretically be fine with whole food. There is evidence that amounts above and beyond the RDA for some vitamins is helpful though, so I stick with it. Some good ones are Puritan's Pride Iron Free Green Source, Sport Pharma Multi-V (much less potent if you're looking for that), or what I currently use, NOW Adam

1) Supplements are completely unregulated by the FDA, which means they are not tested for efficacy, or truth in labeling, or even safety.

2) There is much research that shows that isolating nutrients in a pill is not the same as getting the nutrients from food.

3) With that said, a multivitamin still may be okay to use as an "insurance policy". Choose one whose label mentions the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), which means it has at least been tested to confirm that it contains what the label says.

4) The only other supplements I would even consider are fish oil, vitamin D, and MAYBE glucosamine/chondroitin (sp?) for joint pain. Oh, and two baby aspirin maybe.
