Motivation Issues

Hi Everyone,

I am 20 years old. Ever since I was a child, I have had weight issues where all my relatives would tell me that I was fat and needed to lose weight. Quite frankly, I don't think I am fat... overweight sure, slightly but not a lot. I lost about 30 pounds 3 years ago but gained it all back last summer due to some serious stressors. I leaned towards eating during stress and ended up gaining a lot of weight.

Now this August, I have a major event coming up. I am getting engaged with all my relatives and everyone present in the big engagement party. I really want to lose weight but somehow I am lacking motivation. I want to feel my best on this day and really want to start something to help me lose weight but somehow I just cant motivate myself to.

I really appreciate if anyone can help me with this problem.

You're lacking the motivation to lose weight for a family event, correct?

What if, just if, we take a different spin on your goal by saying you want to get fit for the start of your life with your fiance, and you want to be fit to handle your future crazy wonderful children.

That's a pretty good goal to want to reach.

I've got a half written journal entry that im having a tough time finishing - about being ready to lose weight.. and until you have it in your head and your heart that this is what you really want to do - it's not going to be effective. Until you can do it for yourself - it's not going to work.

the motivation has to come fromwithin you - because that is what willmake it work long term.

Ask yourself why you want to lose weight and get healthy. Ask yourself why youo want to stay just as you are...

I know how you feel. Coming from an Asian family, it was tough being the chubby kid. After high school I started going to the gym and getting outdoors to walk or jogg. I lost a good amount of weight.

Lately I felt I gained some weight, but it may be due to the increase in my workout. (I hope) But either way, not being at the weight I was used to makes me loose motivation to go to the gym. I feel no matter what I do, I will never shed those pounds. Some days I think I should go back to starving myself so I can loose weight. But those are not long term goals.

I think the idea is to be positive about a long term goal you are seeking. Whether it is to lose weight, or complete that hour long kick boxing class without quiting. You still have a good amont of time before August to get into better shape than you are today. Everyday is a new day to start something new.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I agree completely with Mal's post. This is something I had to figure out on my own, over time. I was told my whole life that I should "do something about my weight" but until you have this snap, a crack, a moment in your head where it makes sense for you to try, it is very very hard to get started and stay on track. In my opinion, it sounds like you need to figure out whether your desire to lose the weight is coming from outside yourself (which won't work) or from inside yourself (which is what you need). A little bit of reflecting on the matter might illuminate this for you.

Best of luck!
