Mother Might Have Heart Failure

She is staying in the hospital for 24 hours for more examination. I don't know why it has to happen to my Mother; she has lost 90 pounds and in the best shape of her life. Shes 49.

Everything was starting to go normal in my house until this. This sucks

Sorry to hear that jman, hope all goes well...

Alright I got more news. So far the tests are showing she is fine but she is still staying overnight at the hospital. Thats a bit of relief. They said her blood pressure keeps getting higher and higher.

What condition does your mother have? Heart problems in the 1800s were 100% fatal - now they are closer to 0% fatal for a 49 yo woman. As I recall, your mom is a personal trainer, right? There is very little with the heart that can't be cured or controlled through mediations, surgery, or a pacemaker.

Jman, if it makes you feel any better, I have already had one heart procedure - a stent implant in 11/06 for a clogged artery - and am scheduled for surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm (what John Ritter from Three's Company died from) and a replacement aortic valve.

I have been told by my cardiologist that after laying low for a couple of months, I can resume my triathlon training and should be in the best shape of my life by the end of this year. Oh yeah, I will be 49 in 3 months.

I am a member of another forum, , whose members are Ironmen Triathletes, run 3:30 marathons, bench press 600 # (not all the same person;), all after having heart surgery.

This is scary stuff - I'm not gonna lie to you. But, cardiac care has progressed unbelievably over the last 100 years - far more than cancer treatments - to the point that very few people your mother's age can't go on to lead a normal life after treatment.

Once you know what her condition is (e.g., arrhythmia, fibrilation, valve issue, clogged coronary artery, etc.) post your info or pm me or call me directly. I will list my number in my profile if you want to talk.

You posted your followup while I was typing out my response.

High blood pressure is almost always easily treated with meds, usually a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker. Her bp must have been really high to get admitted. They must have been worried about her having a stroke.

Yeah; thats what they said. They keep giving her pills and it keeps going up for some reason. My mothers symptons were like her shoulder, back I think, and chest bothering her.

Could stroke be related to stress? Because recently she has been very stressed out. There giving her a stress test and some other tests.

I don't know about the stroke, but stress can be a contributing factor to high bp, but I don't know if stress alone can create high bp. I would have guessed that she had some underlying cause and the stress may have exacerbated the problem.

She is good care now. They'll get her bp down and she'll be fine.

out of all the years she could have been born, shes born in this very moment, where technology can sort these things out!

More news:

There having her stay to the hospital now till Thursday. I don't have any more information about why they are keeping her there for so long. She is getting a stress test today and getting a cardioatric something specialist tommorow.

I don't know how she went from healthy to this in a matter of days.

My moms home :)

Here was the diagnosis: Anemia

All she needed was some more Iron in her diet. Man; that is crazy. Luckily, it didn't get to the point where she needed a blood transfusion or anything like that.

They prescribed her some vitamins and other stuff she has to take. Its all over; life can get back to normal. Life with my older brother sucked.

Isn't this rare or something? How the heck you get a vitamin deficiency.

Iron deficiency is not that common in developed countries, but is a non-trivial risk for women of childbearing age, who have higher iron requirements than men or women past childbearing age. It is much less common in men in developed countries, who may be more likely to get too much iron than not enough (consider that men have a much greater tendency to eat iron-rich foods like red meat, even though their iron requirement is much lower than that of women of childbearing age).

Anyway, heme iron from meat is more readily absorbed than iron in plant foods. Iron in plant foods is absorbed better if vitamin C rich foods are eaten together with the iron-rich plant foods. Acidic foods (e.g. spaghetti sauce or chili) cooked in cast iron pots tend to get fortified with iron by dissolving some of the pot. Many grain products are fortified with iron, though eating them with fruit or other vitamin C rich foods will cause the iron to be absorbed better.

However, if she shares meals with men, care needs to be taken so that the men do not get iron overload. Especially if the men at the table are eating all of the meat while she eats all of the non-iron-rich vegetables (an eating pattern that can result in the men being overloaded with iron and the women deficient in iron).

it's easy to get a deficiency.. you just don't eat enough of that. a lot of women have a problem with iron (which is a mineral, BTW) because of their menstrual cycle, a lot of iron is lost there.
