MMA headgear/gloves

Some friends and I were thnking of buying a mat, all of us buying some headgear and gloves and start sparring with eachother and start learning to fight professionally.

How much do headgear and gloves cost? How cheap can i get them for, and is there a particular brand i should be looking for?

go macho brand. Otherwise you will end up with lil things flying into your eyes and all that stuff.

your gear gets left in car, in the garage, or at the matt and all those places do different thingts to equipment, and then it cracks and splitys, and cheap brands have lil pieces of foam and stuff ultimately flying out.

AND- if you quit after the first broken nose, or bone chip in your eyebrow you can sell the gear if it macho brand.

We buy it all the time. ahahahahahaa

YOU MUST ENJOY RECEIVING A STRIKE, the impact, the depth, the pain, the dull thud and the dazed recovery, in order to STRIKE EFFECTIVELY! remember that.

and foot covers, and shin pads, and forearm pads included you can get a brand new set for about $150. do an internet search.

also-- you may want to skip the shin and forearm pads-- DON'T

remember that when someone goes to hit you, you will want to block. Get the pads, otherwise your traingin will get cut short quick.

p.s. why do you want to do this?

I've always wanted to get into this really, but before my weight stopped me. Now that I am weight lifting and have lost my weight I can do it. I just like to fight :)

But im not sure..150 is alot of money

I am actually a very ambitious person..its not just ufc style type of fighting i want to do..i want to learn many new things. I want to get into MMA, i want to start learning capoeira/parkour, i want to rock climb off mountains, go sky diving, go mountain hiking. I am a thrill seeker but all of these ambitions will have to wait until I get the physique that i've been lifting for...

Actually, physique has nothing to do with it...unless you're doing it all for the image. If you really want to do all that you need to build a proper base of strength.

The headgear and gloves can be bought at your local sporting goods store. If they're cheap and ****ty, you'll just have to buy again when they break. In my experience gloves last a long time. Headgear, like FF said, can flake and chip. But that's like TKD stuff. If you buy gloves and headgear made for boxing...ie, made for taking hits full contact, then you'll be fine. Quality, as you may imagine, comes pretty standard if people can get injured when they aren't. They're lawsuits waiting to happen. Look for headgear and glove TYPES. Various ounces of gloves, headgear with/without a mouth/jaw guard, etc.

As for brands, when was the last time you heard of anything else-- or seen anything else other than Everlast, Fairtex, Champion...etc? There is an oligopoly on fight gear.

You can buy lots of interlocking rubber/foam mats at any hardware store.

Well, im not doing it for the image. But I'd like to have my dream body before i actually start performing this kind of stuff, with a core base of muscle. Not just some "strong" dude. But thanks for the advice, i will look into it
