Mixing Cardio Types into Workout

Hello,

I've recently decided to overhaul the cardio side of my gym workout as I was starting to get into a routine. I had previously been doing 30 mins on the cross trainer or treadmill followed by 20 mins on the exercise bike (4 nights a week)

I have now introduced intervals into my cardio workouts making them much more challenging and I have also started trying out new machines (rowing machine, stepping machine and "the wave" - not sure if anyone will have heard of that one!)

An example of one my my current workouts is as follows:

20 mins cross trainer (using intervals, burns 200cals)
10 mins "the wave" (burns 100 cals)
20 mins treadmill - fast walking on incline (using intervals, burns 150 cals)
10 mins step machine - (burns 100 cals)

I will alternate this by swapping the wave & step machine for exercise bike and rowing machine every other day.

My main question is - does using 4 different machines for these time periods in the space of one night sound productive? I personally enjoy this as it means I'm not on any one machine for too long (which can be boring!!) However I'm concerned that it isn't as benificial.

...OR is is better to stick to 2 machines per night for longer time periods?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

P.S: I've been attending the gym for 4 years now and my main goal is to maintain my current size as well as constantly toning up. I would like to lose a bit of weight on my stomach area to give my abs more definition, however I am not aiming for big weight loss.

I am not a big fan of machines, but I do not see anything wrong with using 4 machine a night over 2.

Are you just looking to improve your overall fitness levels? If you just looking do to that, there are a few things I would recommend working into your training sessions as well.

From my perspective, cardio is cardio and you'll get a great workout with machines. I bicycle and the question I get is what is the best bike for me...the answer is the one that you will ride. So if the 4 machines is what gets you motivated and keeps you interested then that's the best combo for you. You are doing 60 minutes at a clip which is great! You should feel good about that level of fitness...keep it up.

Thanks very much for the encouraging replies : )

It's a relief to hear that it is still productive to do a workout involving 4 machines per night, as it keeps me interested and actually has led to me doing more per night which is good.

Bingo! It gets you doing more per night, doesn't have to be complicated.
