Weight-Loss Milk - Good? Bad?

Any truth to this article? Because I have cereal in the morning and if it is true, then I need to change that.

Seeing how the email link at the bottom is related to PETA, my guess is someone hates milk due to the treatment of animals.

Dairy products "CAN" make you fat, but it has more to do with portion control than the fat contained in dairy. I could be wrong, but skim milk is supposedly fat free.

If you eat huge portions of fatty dairy, yeah, you're likely to gain weight. Same as eating huge portions of grains as well.

i'm sure those veg heads would like you to switch to soy milk on your morning cereal - and some of it's not bad.. but if you do some googling on soy milk- you'll find a plethora of articles on how bad it is for you and how the American Heart Association now no longer reccommends it... (and plenty more conspiracy theorists will tell you why that's so...)

Just because it's on the internet.. doesn't make it true :D

I think anything in vast quantities is bad.. i wouldn't suggest drinking a gallon of skim milk... but i don't think cutting it out completely if yuo enjoy it is a good thing... Moderation in everything...

Also - when I buy milk for the family, I only pick up milk that states specifically that the milk comes from cows that have not been treated with rBGH. Organic milk does not have it or the pesticides & antibiotics.

Milk gets a lot of bad press for a variety of reasons. Some people object to farming methods - cows have to be kept pregnant to produce milk and where do all the baby cows go? Normally the dinner table - you can understand why veggies and animal rights lobbyists object to the dairy industry.

Others bemoan its fat content, the presence of various additives and hormones...

Whatever. I'd suggest that as with anything else, milk - preferably skimmed or semi-skimmed - in moderation is fine. Unless you have an allergy or a lactose sensitivity.

If you're lactose intolerant - lactose is the sugar in milk - your body doesn't produce enough lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose. The result is bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea...all very unpleasant!

Either drink lactose free milk or an alternative like soya milk...which also has its critics! I personally drink a lot of soya milk as I'm lactose sensitive - more than a few cups of tea with milk and I'm in trouble!

Let's face it, there's a new food/health scare practically every day. Believe them all and you'd eat nothing at all!

Milk is packed with protein, vitamins, minerals, calcium, etc and is a valuable addition to your diet. A few glasses a day or with your breakfast cereal is unlikely to do you any harm.

If you like it, then drink it!

Cheers,
Marcus

Further to my last reply, I just came across this report.
Indeed such are the doses of these chemicals, a woman drinking two glasses of soya milk a day over the course of a month will see the timing of her menstrual cycle alter. It has been estimated that infants who are fed soya formula exclusively receive an amount of oestrogen equivalent to five birth control pills every day
However, aside from research linking soya to reduced male fertility, studies now link the phyto-oestrogens found in the plant to an increased risk of other types of cancer. It has also been claimed that it damages brain function in men and causes hidden developmental abnormalities in infants. Some even attribute the early onset of puberty in western women to the spread of soya in diets.
.... and as for the environmental impact of soya farming:
Soya now occupies more land in Argentina than all other crops added together, covering more than half the country's arable land. It is predicted that 10,000 hectares of forest is being lost every year - the equivalent of 20 football fields an hour. If this continues, in five years' time the country's native forests will disappear completely.

I've recently switched to soymilk...honestly it had nothing to do with health benefits, I just hate the smell of milk. LOL My daughter drinks both my soymilk and her lowfat milk. I think I'll be keeping her out of the soy, don't want to speed up her puberty (I'm so not ready) nor do I want any of the other potentially hazardous things to happen to her.

I'm not big on soy milk, rice milk for me, but I drink the real stuff too.
