Weight-Loss Milk. Does it do the body good?

There seems to be a range of opinions on this forum about dairy products, but I haven't run across a recent discussion dedicated to the subject.

For me, dairy is great. I think.

When I'm trying to drop fat, skim milk (several glasses per day) is an excellent way to feel full on what appears to be very healthy stuff. And a nice bit of cheese goes a long way for me in curbing cravings.

What are your thoughts? Do you think dairy is good, bad, or neither here nor there? Are you concerned about hormones and chemicals in processed dairy? Think that everybody is lactose-intolerant to some degree, whether we know it or not?

I like my milk. I like cheese, and I like yoghurt. All in moderation, but I am right there with you, some milk makes me eat less, and a piece of cheese can curb hunger for a good while.

I am not worried about hormones or any of that. If I was worried about that, I couldn't eat anything. Everything we eat has been somehow chemically treated, altered and processed. Animals are fed with chemical concoctions, vegetables and fruit are genetically altered and treated with pesticides and who knows what else. Heck, the mere process of breathing fills your body with a myriad of dangerous things.

I don't think that everybody is lactose intolerant in some way - never heard that statement before. In fact, in my life so far I have come across one person who is mildly lactose intolerant, and she prefers to put up with the unpleasant side effects rather than giving up on her milk and cheese.

I'm wondering - humans are brought up on milk. I mean, breast milk anybody? And then cow's milk for most, or formula. Been done for donkey's years, and all of a sudden it's supposed to be wrong?

Kinda feel sorry for all those babies that will have to gnaw on turkey breast and raw beans in future generations. :smilielol5:

I personally think dairy is great. The only 'downside' is that I love cheese too much. I could probably scarf down my daily calories worth of cheese in a sitting. Especially if it's Havarti... Or Port Salut.

But overall the research I've seen has been positive for milk's health benefits.

I do worry a little about the hormones and chemicals but... I also eat beef, so no more so for milk than for anything else. And you can get the organic/natural/whatever to deal with that.

I also think that it's damned silly to say that most people are actually lactose intolerant but don't know it. When you are born, you are not lactose intolerant at all because all you eat is mother's milk! Now, prior to some genetic shifts, the mechanisms to process lactose got turned off at around age 2, which means that after 2 years of age, you're lactose intolerant. But everyone's body already knows how to handle the milk, so the 'change' is just not to turn off the tolerance after age 2. It's not like there had to be some huge adaptation to digest lactose, all that had to happen was that the switch doesn't turn the tolerance off.

I believe that a lot of diets want you to restrict or remove dairy because they are selling a diet that advertises you eat as much as you want, no calorie counting! But any diet where you eat as much as you want still has to cut calories - and there are numerous studies that show that if you reduce food choices, you also reduce total calories consumed. So if you remove a high calorie density option... people will end up fewer calories and therefore (hopefully) lose weight. Since I'm fine with portion control and moderation, this isn't an issue and I consider dairy to be a valuable part of my diet :)

I eat dairy everyday. Greek yogurt, low fat skim milk cheeses, skim milk that I make custards with and use in my cereal. I also use real 1/2 &1/2 in my morning tea. I also treat myself once a week to frozen yogurt or ice cream. I measure my portions and count it all in my daily calorie count. I have learned to use less 1/2&1/2 in my tea but I just don't like the taste of the no fat ones. I also try to always use the organic dairy products.

I was thinking the same thing. The whole debate of whether you should be drinking animal milk at all is a little interesting.
I'm a biology student and I and studying to be a scientist. I had to study lactose intolerance a few months ago. Supposedly, starting around age 2, a child starts to become lactose intolerant. Only a few people on earth continues to be tolerant. By the teenage age, most people on earth now have some sort of lactose intolerance. There are certain ethnic groups that lactose intolerance is very common in: Asian, African American and Native American to name a few. It is said that most people have no idea they are intolerant since they don't have the strong side effects like bloating, nausea, stomach pains, gas, etc.

That's it in a nutshell.
This is only what I was taught. I'm not saying whether if I believe it or not. <-- hey that rhymes ^_^

I think I'm intolerant but I personally love dairy products. *shrugs* LOL

(For anyone wanting proof of statements made: That was for San. I do not have links and sources since I'm casually responding. I also don't have the book anymore. Feel free to find out more online, from doctors, or through books about intolerance and whether the above statements are true or false. Have a fantastic day you guys! ^_^)

Any idea what kind of effects the intolerance actually has if it's not the bloating/gas etc?

I'm not really familiar with the actual biological process behind it - although I have heard that even if you're lactose intolerant you can still eat yogurt.

My husband is mildly lactose tolerant, but it takes a significant quantity before he has noticeable effects. Likewise another friend of mine is lactose intolerant but can still eat cheese and drink milk as long as she limits portions.

I have this weird guilt about eating cheese. I went on that vegan kick. It didn't work out. I am in love with chicken.

Cheese is generally my enemy. I love it, but I have just toned down how much I use so I don't feel deprived. I also avoid putting it on everything all the time, and if it's going to put my over my daily calorie intake I don't use any.

So I guess me and cheese have reached an understanding.

I dislike milk however, and use almond milk for my honey bunches of oats. ^.^

Yeah... I tend to buy the reduced fat cheese these days. And try not to eat too much. It's probably part of the reason that Atkins was never 100% successful for me...

I like milk for drinking though :) Although I almost never drink my calories these days.

Man, I love cheese. I can't imagine life without it. i do buy reduced fat for daily use...but I can seriously go for a great piece of cheese once in awhile (I'm half Italian...so a great grinder can not be had without SHARP Provolone...and some killer blue cheese is a MUST a couple of times a year. LOL). Daily I use non-fat milk, fat free cottage cheese or yogurt, and i treat myself weekly to fat free frozen yogurt.
Cutting dairy would be a real nightmare for me. I know there is NO WAY I could stay on a diet requiring that, unless it was life or death. I have NO issues whatsoever eating dairy. My daughter thinks she may be slightly intolerant, but we are not at all sure if it's true.

I couldn't go without dairy... yum yum! I usually use skim varieties for milk and light cheese where I can (if I use cheese at all). But double smoked cheddar and brie are my downfall, especially with some dried fruit and nuts. So it's treat times only for those cause I have no control hehehe :D

My boyfriend is mildly intolerant but he chooses to ignore it cause he is pretty much like that with most things *shrugs*

I just happened to find this in my daily search of the world's news.
DRINK UP, PEEPS, MILK WON'T KILL YOU!

all i know is that when i drink/eat milk products I wish I would die...and I'm fairly certain that anyone near me wishes I would die too...

My lactose intolerance is VERY severe. I take pills called lactaid. And even with those pills, I will get sick if I have anything but a small amount of milk! If I have any bit of milk without the pills, I WILL be sick for at least 3 days...I get hallucinations, extreme bloating, gas, intense pain, things are coming out every orifice possible...I will literally be sick every 15-20 mins....it's insane. INSANE...I MAY get sick like that every 2 years, I watch what I eat so much. And even taking the pills, and having as little as possible, I will still get bloated and feel icky.

There are things that I can eat that are made from milk. Old cheese and hard cheese I can have - old cheddar, swiss cheese - these things have the lactose burnt off. I can have goats / sheep's milk, and I can also have SOME yogurt - it needs to have active cultures in it, as they aid in digestion.

I've been intolerant for about 10 years now...it started when i got sick back in highschool with blood poisoning, and then pancreatitis. Being that sick change my body's production of the enzymes that digest milk - or so they say..

Yeah...that's my story...now you know my most embarrassing details about milk!

Milk would probably be doing better than worse for you of course and lots of things cant be eaten without milk or drank without milk

cottage cheese and some different types of cheeses in moderation would do no harm whatsoever!

I dont drink milk in glasses but i have it with cereal and tea etc and i am all for milk because of its casein proteins and calcium etc,Also i eat alot of low fat yogurt and it is very good,i think you are right to have good big glasses of milk and some cheese aswell,as long as your still exercising and staying healthy, your winning :D
