So if you haven't heard, the new thing for your pets is embedding a tiny rice sized chip into your pets back.
The point is so that if you animal gets out, and if and only if animal control has a scanner to match your chip they can safely recover your pet. There are a few success stories throughout it all and it sounds fabulous!
BUT...
There are many places with chips, many brands, many types, and all scanners don't cover all the chips.
SO, why waste $30-$50 on a microchip that only offers a sliver of insurance on your loved one?
I got a free chip in my cat about 4 years ago. I was devastated! I put out signs, I called the vets offices, and unfortunately someone took him and CHANGED his chip to their name by pretending they were me. The microchip place did not even have the nerve to get a password, a number, NOTHING to confirm their identity!
How did I know this happened? Simply put, when I called in his chip to report he was lost, they asked who he is registered under. I said my name and they said the chip is registered under another name. I asked who and they refused to give me this information.
So a word of warning to all. If you love your animals, it may sound like a cool investment. BUT save your money and buy your baby a new toy.
