Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

I’ve heard that in the US (maybe this also happens in other places) it’s no longer considered polite to say “Merry Christmas” in these days because it might be offensive to certain people. This kind of amazes me because in my humble opinion Christmas is a traditional celebration that goes beyond a simple religious commemoration. I know that there are a lot of people from different origins who also have different beliefs in the US, but I don’t see how wishing somebody to have a great and happy day that’s called Christmas can be offensive in the least. Maybe there is an over sensitiveness nowadays concerning religious topics. I’m not catholic but agnostic and I myself say Feliz Navidad (Merry Christmas) to other people here (I’m in Uruguay), and to me it sounds exactly as saying happy New Year or any other whishing.

What do you think? Did you use to say Merry Christmas and you decided to change that? What happens in the other English speaking countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, etc?

I’m just curious as to what this issue looks like to the insiders.

By the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS or HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you all! ;)

We generally say Merry Christmas in the UK. I've never heard anyone say happy holidays. Generally I just say bah humbug.

Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la.
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.

See the blazing Yule before us.

Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Follow me in merry measure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
While I tell of Yule-tide treasure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Fast away the old year passes.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Hail the new year, lads and lasses
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Sing we joyous, all together.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Me in a reindeer headband. Ok.....it doesn't look very nice, so no nasty comments

It's all about Christmas. It's Christmas because we're American, damnit! The holiday is not even based in religion...it is only the religious baggage others wanted it to have that Christmas is becoming controversial...

Merry Christmas, yall

It originated from a pagan holiday, but it's become a church sanctioned holiday through church politics. It's got a really long history.
