Max power, max muscle recruitment

I am 51 years old and in good shape. I jog 3 -4 times a week for two miles and I have been rock climbiong for 6 months. My problem is that when climbing if I really go for it my body crashes instantly. I lose my strength and totally lose my wind and sweat profusely. I have been examined by my DR and I'm assured my heart is fine.

Question I want to train to improve my power so that I can max out without crashing. Can anyone offer exercises that will train me for improvement in this area?
Thank you.

There is typically an exponential decay in your endurance time as your near your maximum effort at any activity. For example if you are working at 80% of your capability you may be able to perform for 30 minutes, at 90% 10 minutes, 95% 5 minutes, 100% only 30 seconds. For example if you are lifting weights you might be able to do 15 reps with 100 pounds, 12 reps with 110 pounds, 8 reps with 120 pounds and only 1 rep with 125 pounds. When you reach near your 1RM the number of reps drops off fast. So I would guess since you are able to run 2 miles, your cardiovascular endurance is pretty good, so you must be pushing some muscle(s) to near 100% effort. The only solution is to increase your strength with a good all round resistance exercise routine. The good news is if you have not done resistance exercise in the recent past you typically can make some pretty good improvements with few months of consistent effort. See the stickies under beginning strength training for a starting point.
