Weight-Loss

I know you always say read labels, and I do. Well, I usually read key things like calories, sodium, etc- but I can say I don't always read ingredients. What are things I need to avoid? What are things you have on your grocery list? I really want to start watching out for ingredients more, so since you always say read labels , and know what you are eating I thought you would be the person to ask!

Anyone else is welcome to answer also.

Thanks!

the key ingredient that I look out for is HFCS (high frucrose corn syrup) which is in a lot of foods, especially those that are seeminly healthy sounding - like whole wheat breads and many mass produced cereals)

other than that I just dumb it down -if it's got a bunch of ingredients that Ican't pronounce or cant find elsewhere in the grocery store - i'm not gonna eat it...

Another simple trick is to use "whole foods" shop around the outside of most super markets. The pre-made, pre-packaged, processed crap is where they hide all of the baddies.

dried beans are in the inside aisles -

as are whole grains... :D

olive oil... dried spices... vinegars...

dont be afraid of the inside aisles...

I was surprised yesterday to read a Q&A on the bodybugg site that asked about HFCS. The experts at Apex said that it's perfectly healthy. It surprised me because usually, HFCS is cited as typically unhealthy for your diet. So then they went on the say that in HUGE amounts it is bad (when 15% or more of your calories come from it) but that the amounts they sell in their products were perfectly fine. Ah ha.

I rarely buy prepackaged food in the traditional sense (hamburger helper, etc) but I do buy cottage cheese, yogurt, bread, etc and all those things can have funky ingredients in them. Anything that has a nutrition label should be scrutinized. Nearly all the ingredients should be familiar to you. There are whole books that tell you what all those chemicals are. I've thought about buying one since I'm a science nerd, but it was kinda depressing really and I'd just rather not know... :p

CPSI (center for science in the public interest) has recently changed their tune on HFCS and are saying it's really no worse than sugar is.. BUUUUT.... they won't say it's healthy- just no worse than sugar... I find it far sweeter than sugar is - and have successfully avoided it for the past 2 years.. so I'm not changing my tune on it...

You can get organic cottage cheese and yogurts that aren't loaded with preservatives...

Sorry for the late reply! Thanks so much for everyones answers, time to go read everything in the store! At least it will give me something to do!

Yep, that's what I try to stick to. My closest grocery just stopped carrying organic cottage cheese and organic plain yogurt (they have flavored ones). They were from the same company, so I'm thinking it is a temporary supply issue...I hope...!
