Low level headache after cycling class?

Hi,

I regularly take part in a cycling fitness class at my health club(spinning is one title for it), and if I push myself hard, I seem to get a low level headache in the evening!

Is this common or is there a specific reason for this, I think my setup on the bike is correct, or am I just pushing myself too hard?

Thanks,

Mark

The causes can be far too numerous to point to one thing or a summary of things, without more particular information regarding yourself.

Carbohydrate consumption (or lack there of) in the diet can cause mild headaches (for some), but since we do not know your diet, we can not be certain this is the cause. Headaches from lack of carbohydrates isn't necessarily a health risk like some like to fathom (non-diabetic assumption made).

Therefore, can you give information regarding your health back ground, dietary habits (particularly calories, carbohydrates, etc, etc)? What is the frequency of the spinning class per week, and the duration of this event?

Chillen

My guess would be dehydration. It's the simplest thing that comes to mind, but obviously any other malnutrition (ex: lack of carbs as stated by Chillen) could lead to this symptom. Try and give some more information, like how much and what you normally eat and drink before the cycling class

Many thanks for your replies :)

Oh what a tangled I weave, as you will see from my reply!

With regard to my own health I have recently been diagnosed with fatty liver disease which means I also have insulin resistance, this condition is improving hopefully will be gone soon!

I was also involved in a car crash about 8months ago in which I received whiplash injuries, so I am thinking there may be a link there, I will try making small adjustments on the bike to compensate.

My bodyweight is 280lbs at 6 foot but is coming down slowly, my calorie/carbohydrate consumption is not a problem as you can probably assume from my bodyweight!

I probably do 4-5 spinnning classes a week at 45-60 minutes at a time, I have googled the problem and it is fairly common at maximal/submaximal work rates, will try hydrating more and see what happens.

You're welcome.

This is one of the reasons I ask questions, when new/old members have concerns like you mentioned in your opening post. In a nutshell form, Insulin Resistance can mean that the Pancreas is subjected to releasing more Insulin (and maybe in some cases over secreting insulin, among other things) to resistant cells.

Are you taking any medications for this fatty liver condition?

What sort of injuries are we speaking about? Isn't it a viable consideration (with one in your position) to seek a medical opinion before starting a fitness program?

Truthfully, I do not understand these comments. Directing this comment to the specific combo only, Calorie/carbohydrates are not necessarily synonymous for weight gain. In other words, Calories can be high (or higher than one's MT-Line), Carbohydrates low or very low, and one can gain weight.

The bottom line really is that you were/are hyper in calories the majority of the time attributing the major influence on tissue gain with some degree of interest given to consumption of carbohydrates.

Hydration is a basic and influential element most take for granted.

I have been treated medically and have been given the all clear by my osteopath and doctor. My diet is carbohydrate plentiful, if anything my protein intake is slightly low

hi, sometimes just wearing a helmet, bandana or beanie on my bike (real bike!) can cause me a bit of a headache when i finish, could be as simple as that.
shortest ride time is no less than an hour, and i stay well hydrated.

Thanks for the suggestion, don't wear any headgear.
