Low Impact vs. High Impact

When trying to figure out how many calories I'm burning when doing aerobics, it asks me is it High Impact or Low Impact. I have NO idea what the difference is. Can anyone explain??? Thanks. :)

I don't know if I can explain this well, but low-impact is more of a walking motion...think of a regular grapevine move. High-impact is doing aerobics with a jumping motion. Think jumping jacks. Both feet are off the ground. Most routines can be done either low or high impact depending on how much (for lack of a better word) jumping you put in the routine.

High impact means busting your ass and getting totally drained.

Low impact means doing little more than going through the motions.

This can apply to most everything it goes well beyond aerobics.

I must disagree with you on this one Corndoggy.

Low Impact usually refers to the level of jumping and "impact" on joints, etc, not to the intensity. Some low impact exercises are very high intensity - bike racing/Spin is considered more of a low impact exercise, but is very high intensity. The same goes for step style classes and videos - low impact has less jumping, etc then high impact, but is not necessarily of lower intensity in all cases.

Yeah, you're right, some of us just incorrectly use that term to describe the intensity, especially when calorie counting comes into the picture.
