Low Carbs - Am I Eating Too Much Fat?

Hi All,

Well I've been carrying around an extra 20lbs or so for about 3 years now, but I waited until 3 weeks before I have to wear a swimsuit in front of coworkers to do anything about it, right?

So 10 days ago I cut out all carbs. Except for once (and except for green veggies & tomatoes) I haven't touched a carb in 10 days. Plus I went from exercising 2x/week to every day for an hour (vigorous)...for 10 days!

Well I GAINED four pounds!

I think it's because I'm eating 3 full meals, (I often would skip breakfast), and probably too much cheese, caffiene and dairy. Also I have not counted calories, (but I haven't eaten huge portions of anything). So now I am really going to restrict calories, as I have 10 days left.

How did I mess this up so badly? I even bought ketone strips and I am burning fat. Must be the cheese & dairy, right?

Why?

Why not?

Ok, and what is your plan once you lose the weight and start to eat normally again; besides gaining 20 lbs and then some?

I even bought ketone strips and I am burning fat

There's no way to tell how much fat you've lost for sure

Must be the cheese & dairy, right?

Since when is dairy bad?

How did I mess up so badly?

Well, I can't tell you for sure, but I can help you out on a few things...

First of all, cutting off any source of energy (fat, carbs, protein) is considered a fad and should not be in your best interest. Carbs are the body's primary source of energy and carbs do not make you fat. Fat is stores when one even occures: When you consume more calories than what your body is burning. Instead of focusing on the individual sources of energy, you should focus on energy as a whole. Counting calories is not easy for everyone, but it's pretty simple, I do it....It'll really enlighten you as to how little a portion REALLY is compared to what you'd think. Cutting your calories too low is a surefire way to fail; you're not getting the energy you need, your body won't get rid of the pudge, you'll lose muscle and bone, and in the end, you'll still end up with the same bodyfat. Try a healthier approach....People normally eat alot more than they think..Try and actually keep track of what and how much you eat, by reading the nutritional stickers and measuring your food..Then use to calculate your daily intake. Find out how many calories you need to maintain your current weight, and since theres no 100% sure way to get an exact number, try and use one of those BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) calculators which are all over the internet; then try and aim for about 500 calories less intake than your BMR value and see how it goes. Drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated and perform regular exercises, you dont have to kill yourself, just pace yourself and stick to something you can continue as a lifestyle; walk, run, jog, whatever works for you. Read around the boards, there's lots of good info there.....It's late and I'm starting to run on sentences....GL

Read above post... twice even...

then read the stickied threads around the forum especially in On Topic, Nutrition and exercise- you've b een given way too much bad information.

Carbs do not make you fat - excess calories do.
Fat/Cheese/Dairy does not make you fat - excess calories do.
