Lost toenails from running

When you lose a toenail because of running (I'm guessing for me from toe hitting against the shoe running downhill), how long does it take to grow back?.....does it grow back normal looking like the original? Is there any way to speed things up? (probably wishful thinking)

it should start to grow back within 2 weeks. i lose mine some year ago at a very same situation like yours. it grew back normal in less than 2 weeks, so you shouldn't be worried.

thanks for the reply; I had my running shoes fitted by a professional at a good running store; so I can't think the shoes would be at fault. Does this just happen to most people sooner or later once you start logging enough miles?...anyway glad to hear you don't end up with narly toes for life.. LOL

I have never had that happen to me, but I don't log big numbers, just 20 - 25 miles / week. Are your toenails too long?

no they aren't long; they are pedicured to be the right length, not just for vanity reasons but because I have heard this could happen to runners.
There wasn't really even big warning signs like alot of soreness during / after running.I could feel my feet pushing on the front of the shoes a bit maybe running downhill especially, I think, the more confidence I would get to run faster downhill; but that's it. All my socks are even the ones recommended at the running store. Can't figure out why it only happened on one foot either. (or at least so far)

Well, I know this happens to a lot of runners, so congrats on reaching that level of the game, where your toenails fall off! LOL!

To figure out how long it will take to grow back, just do some fun math. How often do you cut your toe nails? Every week? And how much do you take off? About 1/10 an inch? If it is the whole toenail, it can take a long time to come back. Just wrap it up to prevent further damage or pain from the exposed skin.

Thanks Run, yah it was the whole toenail :(( I have been putting a plush bandaid on it and that helps for sure when I have running shoes on.The screwed up toe goes nicely with the white feet and tanned legs that runners seem to get, LOL Surprising how fast they do start to grow back, and soreness doesn't last long. The whole thing has made me pay attention while I'm running to see what i might be doing to cause trouble; so that's a good thing!!
Good luck with your running: I read your other post and it sounds like you are doing fantastic !!

It will grow back less than a month. There's a lesson here though - we have to be extra careful when we do our running. Of course, we don't want to lose our toenails, right? :)

Firforever, the same thing just happened to me!

Fitforever,

I just ran the Rock and Roll Half Marathon on September 5th. Although I've been training and running 6-8 miles a day a few times a week, it was my first big event where I did over 13 miles. My left big toenail was a little sore afterward but nothing too too bad. I figured it was just from running downhill. When I went to cut my toe nails just the other day, I must have somehow gotten a blister under that nail because a clear liquid came out from underneath that toenail. Two days later it seemed fine, I was at home wearing flip flops and accidentally bumped it. The entire nail came up! I had to pull it off as it was obviously dead. This didn't hurt too bad.. the part that hurts some now is the really thin layer of nail that I guess is still on the toe! It's really sensitive to the touch right now... nothing seems infected. I've been pouring hydrogen peroxide on it for the last 2 nights and keeping it wrapped in a bandage.

I'm the same as you though.. I like my pedicures and I always wear polish. How is your progress coming? Has it grown back at all? Should I let it get air or keep it wrapped in the bandage?

What should I do from here?

I also read online that getting an acrylic nail put on helps with the growth. I read all these horror stories of how it might grow back in crooked or be ingrown. I would be scared to attach an acrylic nail to what's on there now! What has happened to you since this happened??
