lost inches but not lbs

Hi everyone,

I am new here and wanted to introduce myself. A year ago February i stopped smoking and lost 80 lbs.

Then in May of this year i turned 41 and figured it was time to finish off what i had started. So i started eating better again and joined a gym. I have been working very hard almost everyday 45 mins on cardio on the tread and then about an hour of toning. But the scale has stayed the same through out. Well today was one month and the trainer at the gym said it was time for measurments. I lost .25 " arms, .5 " chest, 1.5" waist, 1" abdomen, 2 " hips, 2.25" thighs, and .25" on the calf.

It is the lack of weight lost that has me bummed, is it true what they say about going up in weight before it falls

I was wondering if this is about average from what everyone else has seen with their measurments. Want to know that all my hard work and dedication is paying off. Or that i need to work harder

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Chickenr

Hey chickenr, great work!

I would say of course your hard work is paying off. I mean, you can see it. Obviously, you haven't lost weight, because you're still building new muscle (especially with all that toning). Don't worry, just keep doing what you're doing, without increasing the intensity, and you'll notice a heap of weight loss before long.

Congratulations on your progress so far. :)

Thanks Shinsplint. I am still going to work very hard at it and maybe this week the pounds will melt away. The major thing is i am getting healthier. My biggest goal is to make it a life change, so it is all good.:)

I totally agree with sometimes you lose inches before pounds. It's frustrating when you don't see the scale go down. I began this weight loss journey (the second time I've done this) April 8, 2007 and for a couple of weeks I gained weight, then all of a sudden I lost like ten pounds in a week. I know it's because I was building muscle first, then I lost the fat. I can really tell in my clothing. Try not to focus on the scale too much. Stick with measurements.

I'm glad I saw this thread. I have been going about a month and a half so far, trying to lose 2lbs a week. It seems that I have hit a plataue and actually gained 2 of the almost 8lbs I lost. But I have lost 1/2" everywhere on my body - hips, waist, calves, thighs, arms, bust...so I must be doing something right! It just gets frustrating on my weekly weigh-ins and not losing anything.

Also if you compare equal volumes of muscle and fat, muscle weighs more.
