Lost ~10 lbs in 3 weeks but...

Over the past 3 days or so I have not moved at all. It's frustrating because I want to get fit for college in about 6 months and I feel like it's wasting my time. I'm 5' 10" 250lbs. It was going so smooth until now.. I went from eating a complete bag of chips in one meal to a very healthy diet (I think?)

I start off the day with a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats (in skim milk) then eat a turkey or chicken sandwich on whole grain bread with low fat cheese and a banana/apple for lunch. Once I get home from school I usually eat some beef jerky for a snack and have lean cuisine or beef and veggie soup for dinner, and some more beef jerky a couple hours after dinner. And of course, 8-10 servings of water. There are 5-1/2 hours between breakfast and lunch (nothing I can help though, got stuck with the last lunch shift), could that be a problem? Oh, and no, I don't count calories.

Advice appreciated

Your diet is not as healthy as you think it might be.

Honey Bunches of Oats has 200 cal, 41 grams of carbs per cup, and only 2 grams of that is fiber. All the rest is simple carbs. It has 4 gm of protein, and 3 of fat. 1/3 of the fat is saturated (the bad kind).

Compare that to a cup of cooked oatmeal, with 150 cal, only 25 gm of carb, 4 gm of which is fiber, 4 gm of protein, and 3 gm of fat. Oatmeal contains no saturated fat.

Beef jerky provides protein, yes, but at a great cost. It contains 7 gm of fat per oz, 40% of which is saturated fat. The worst part is the sodium content, which comes to a whopping 625 mg. per oz.

Watch out for canned soups, too. Most of them are jammed with sodium, sometimes over 1,000 mg. per serving.

I'm wondering if you are getting enough calories. Maybe you should track what you eat on a daily basis for a several days to see if you are eating enough.

i'm not an expert but...

the first thing that really did strike me is the amount of sodium in everything you are having - that could be leading to water retention.

you might want to record your calories in a progam like for a few days just to see where you are right now - it's tough to adjustif you don't know where you are starting from

Bran Muffins

You should try eating as many bran muffins as possible. They'll make you drop the kids off by the pool a lot, but they good!

i would suggest going to site like and signing up for their free membership...you may not be eating enough calories in a day, on that site it suggests how many calories you should have in a day. Not eating enough calories helps keep the weight on...your body goes into starvation mode and holds on to those extra pounds. Another tip i have is not eating the same thing every day. I have found in my own studies that eating the same things makes you bored and leads to naughty binges. You should find a variety of foods that you like that are healthy. I have also found that it is easier for myself to lose weight if i have a diet plan....i have many times gone out there to wing it and got no where. I am now working with weight watchers and i am very happy with my results. I hope you get something out of this...Good Luck!!

I don't follow any particular diet. I just eat when I feel hungry and only eat enough to be full. I usually eat oatmeal or soup with low salt, and apples, veggies, fruits. etc. It's an all natural diet. I love V8 as well but only drink one per day due to the sodium. I lose about 1.5 lbs everyday. I am so sick of being fat. At least once I'm finished my diet i will only be ugly! lmao :p I've lost 15 lbs since march 1'st.

do it for a few months and if you still dont lose weight then think about how you can change it..

wow
tommy_g

how did u lose 15 pounds since march first!
thats amazing
and the exact kinda of weight loss im looking for
can u tell me everything youve been eating and doing please?

Firstly, congratulations. 10lbs is still an achievement!
As the others said, I think you need to review how much processed and bad quality food you are eating rather than look at the quantities.
And exercise... You didn't mention if you are doing any at all, but increasing you activity level will burn calories and tone you up.
I also had a period of 2 weeks where I only lost 1 lb, but sticking to it worked. I am now back to losing 2-3 lbs a week, which is about right for me. (Any quicker and I find it's just water I'm losing. Plus I don't want loads of flabby skin left behind after!)
20 lbs gone in total :)
Good luck and do keep going!

you always looks a ton of weight in the first couple of weeks of diet and exercise. Then it slows down. See the biggest loser for examples.

Id go along with Mals advice about fitday.com and checking sodium.

I took some of your advice, I cut back on the sodium and started eating oat meal in place of cereal, quit eating the soups (900mg of sodium in a can!) but still eating the beef jerky as a snack. I eat Jack Link's Premium Cut jerky which has 0.5g of fat and 0g of sat fat, only 300mg of sodium and 8g protein so it doesn't seem bad. Tell me if you think otherwise and I'll reconsider. But anyways, I've started losing weight again, down to 244.6 this morning :) Thanks for all your advice!
