Losing Weight Whilst Gaining Muscle?!?

One thing thats always confused me about losing weight and getting fitter is that muscle weighs six times more than fat (so I heard!) so if you are losing fat whilst gaining muscle your weight wont reflect the fat you have lost.

Can someone shed some light on this?

You will only lose fat while gaining muscle when you first begin to weight lift. After that you either will have to decide to gain muscle gain fat or lose fat lose muscle.

You shouldn't go by weight anyways, muscle does way more than fat and the more muscle you gain the more you will weigh.
If you want to measure your progress go by BF%

I'm with Phate in that you cannot put on muscle at the same time as losing fat, although the newbie phenomenon is usually over by the time someone realizes what it is.

However i don't think weight is such a bad thing to go off for mr average joe; especially as many simply don't have the capabilities to regularly figure out body fat %, and the magic machines in gyms are so inaccurate they're no use.

Anyway, back to topic... weight is not a measurement of fitness, and its also dependent on what you class fitness as.

Regardless of how much muscle or fat weighs and no matter how you do it, the answer to your question is, no...your pure weight does not reflect your body composition.

Let's say you weigh 200 lbs and are 25 lbs overweight. You work hard and lose 25 lbs of primarily fat. Then you lift for months on end and put on 25 lbs, mostly muscle. You now look entirely different, are in much better shape yet the traditional scale still reads 200.

Yes, I was bothered by one of the presentations in my speech class. The girl talked about obesity and how your BMI can indicate whether or not you are overweight. She had the whole BMI chart and everything. She pointed to the chart and said if you are over this weight at this height, then you are obese. If that were the case, all bodybuilders would be considered obese because their weight is very high. It says nothing about your body composition.

Do you actually know this for a fact or just re typing what you've read on here?

The connection between losing weight and increasing fitness has got out of hand, people now think that if they lose weight they'll be healthier but of course that isn't always true. The trend for skinny people being held up as examples of health will hopefully change soon.
Fat= unhealthy
Skinny= unhealthy
Muscular= healthy
