Losing Weight & Quitting Smoking At The Same Time

Still on my weight loss journey and have recently made the decision to also give up smoking.

Have read a lot of things online that people gain up to 28lbs when they quit smoking and that’s something I would really like to avoid. Was just wondering if there are any who’ve quit smoking and managed to keep from gaining any weight and if so what did you do?

I’m currently doing a 10k at least 3 times a week my time is pretty poor though, it varies from about 58mins to 1hr 5mins. I’m more than willing to add more runs or different workouts if that is what’s needed or if it’s more of a nutritional issue.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Jolldan and welcome! Heavy smokers do burn a little more energy than comparable non-smokers but for most people I know of the issue is that when you stop smoking you still want something to do or to calm you down so you eat something instead of having a cigarette and that adds up. If you can find things to distract you from the cravings and calm you down (Breathing exercises? Going for a walk? Drawing something?) so you can avoid the extra eating I don't expect you to gain weight.

Hey JD, welcome to the forum!

I am no expert, but I have also heard people who say they gained weight after stopping something. I suspect LaMa is right, its mostly the need to do something. I know years ago AA encouraged people to smoke when they wanted a drink, same kind of thing I think.

Running 10k is great exercise, no matter the time! What is your plan for dieting? I have found calorie control to be the only way I can lose weight.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks a lot.

I’m currently doing 3 fried eggs using that single calorie spray stuff in the morning.

Two apples for lunch.

Supper is a toss up between chicken, fish or more eggs.

Do you know how many calories you are consuming? It would probably help.

Breakfast/Lunch: Half pack of chicken 91 calories, x3 Fried Eggs 270 calories.

Post Workout Snack: x2 Apples 150 calories, 100 to 150g of grapes 80 to 100 calories.

Dinner can vary between three things.

Option 1: Half pack of chicken 91 calories, x3 Fried Eggs 270 calories.

Option 2: x2 pieces of breaded Lemon Sole 500 calories

Option 3: Southern Fried Chicken Fillets 700 calories

Egg yolks are delicious and nutritious and if you're not adding fat to your skillet when frying eggs you may need at least some to keep the whole thing palatable. Especially on days where you go for your first dinner option as it leaves you with less than 1000 kcal total. I'm more concerned about not seeing any vegetables in your list: they'd help fill you up and add valuable vitamins and minerals. Good work on the fruit and protein though!

Sounds like good food and a good workout. I have stopped eating breaded or fried anything, it has helped. However you should do what works for you. Keep up the good work!

the trace nutrients are there, but this is my deciding factor...

less cholesterol ... white - 0mg / yolk - 184mg

for a while i was just tossing out every other yolk, but it finally dawned on me that the industry already does that in offering those cartons of only egg whites.

If that's an important point for you that's 100% valid. Thankfully my cholesterol levels are fine.
