Losing fitness

This is more of a general fitness question ...

How long does it take until a 40 yr old man's level of fitness begins to fall, during periods of no exercise?

I was working out with weights, running and squash for 1.5 to hrs /day until 3 weeks ago. Since then I haven't trained at all and I played squash last night. I believe my fitness level has dropped off but my squash partner maintains that that would only happen after 6 weeks.

Any expert opinions would be welcome

Thanks all

Um, I'm a fit 27 year old and I feel a quite a difference if I slack off for 2 weeks. That reminds me, I better do some excercize.

I don't know what the fitness world says, but I know how it works for me.

when people say they are losing fitness it usually means they are losing cardio fitness, as opposed to stregth fitness, strength fitness may be boosted by a lay off of 1-3 weeks. As opposed to cardio fitness may be boosted after 3 days... after 4-6 weeks of stopping strength traing your body will go back into slob mode and start to lose stregnth whereas after 1-2 weeks of no cardio workouts will tend to decrease your cardio fitness rather than aid in recovery.
