Looking to lose weight; almost all of my fat is in the stomach area

Hello, I am new to the boards and am seeking advice about how I can accomplish my personal weight and fitness goals. On the one hand, I want to develop a personal fitness routine that will help me lead a healthier and happier lifestyle. I'm just starting to do that right now by conducting some strength training and running 4 miles every other day. (Growing up, I played various sports year-round and was extremely physically active.)

On the other hand, I do have specific goals that I want to accomplish. Until very recently (a year ago) my stomach was ultra-flat for an extremely long time (including a number of years with INTENSE exercise and also several years of NO exercise). Over the past year and a half, I have gained weight that appears to be consolidated around my stomach--specifically, my weight seems to have gone directly above my waistline. I want to get rid of the flab in that area, and I would like to turn it into muscle.

I realize that you can't truly "target" weight loss to a specific area, but I am hoping that it is at least possible for me to get rid of this flab in my stomach area through a combination of smarter eating and genuine exercise. I'm a 5'7" 24 year-old male weighing around 150 pounds, and I weighed less than 130 pounds through most of college.

My basic goals are: (1) flatten my stomach by getting rid of this "belly" [I'm still somewhat shocked that I have a "belly"] and (2) shred about 10-12 pounds to get closer to my old weight of 130.

What advice would you all give for my specific goals? Right now, my plan of attack is to reduce my daily caloric intake by about 15% [shifting extant calories from things like Coca-Cola to more oranges and spinach, which I already ate anyway], to run four miles every other day, and to do some strength and conditioning exercises for the stomach area.

Sounds like you already have the start of a good plan. Both cardio and strength training (just make sure you are covering all areas of your body to balance your workout properly) and a good diet.....

The big part about loosing weight is diet and eating the right foods. Get away from the sugars, fats, starchy foods, and empty calories, and if you are going to cut calories the one thing I tend to have to lessen is carbs. Now, we all know you need to burn carbs for energy to get rid of fat, but personally that is what usually I am having too much of. Might be something to look at when you are checking out your food intake and coming up with a diet plan.

As for the flat muscular stomach, can we say sit up, crunches, and obliques??? :D The more the merrier....lol Have at it with the ab workouts and finding differnet ways to work it all out will keep your body in check.

Good luck!
Diane

I would recommend you walking/running on an incline on a treadmill. Since I started running on an incline, even a slight one, it's really helped lessen my belly fat. I assume running uphill targets the muscles around the abdominals as well as the legs and jolts them to attention.

Also, if I can, I would recommend a machine called the CorEvolution. I got it about a week and a half ago, and already I'm seeing massive results. It's EXTREMELY easy to use and the reverse crunches are amazing.

I wish I could help you out more, but these are the only two things I have presonal experience in.

Cool! Thanks for your advice. Keep the feedback coming, folks!

I will post my weight again next week. Before I started this routine two days ago, I weighed 151.4

Hi Invariant,

You know I have always headed to my floor exercises to get my 6 pack, and it never occured to me that maybe incline training may also help. I also have an incline trainer (NordicTrack X5) and when I walk or run I also do it on the incline.

Having difficultly doing as much floor stuff as I could before I'll have to see if it makes a difference :)

(I had surgery and only now was cleared by my doc to workout so still not near my "routine")

take care,
Diane

run / walk to nothing but cardio and make sure you drink nothing but water, I would try to exercise cardio wise every day wether its just 2 miles a day instead of 4 every other.

Thanks! I will try to do that.
