Looking for some guidance.

Hey guys,

Well, first post so hey everyone! :) Okay so before I go into it I'd like to give a little information on my background.

I suffered severe burns on my right leg as a child, have asthma and always hated physical activities in Education so as you an imagine I'm relatively overweight. I don't necessarily eat badly, however; I still put on weight due to a lack of exercise (or at least that's what I tell myself).

I'm a Vegan, eat my 5 a day and stay away from snack foods as much as I can (I rarely eat any form of snack anymore except the occasional chocolate bar - once, maybe twice in a month or maybe a packet of crisps once every blue moon). Although in terms of nutrition I do have a few questions, however this obviously isn't the correct forum section, so I shall post elsewhere in future.

Anyhow, I'm 5'10, 15 stone exactly (95kg, 210ibs) and absolutely hate it. In all honesty I'm finding it unbearable and cannot even look myself in the mirror shirtless, and cannot wear the majority of clothing that I would like to do so. Anyhow, that's enough of that; nobody needs to hear my self-loathing.

I do have a rather large build in terms of bone structure - 47" shoulders, 36.5" rib cage and 40" hips and I'm told that I don't carry it terribly, however; people saying that is no consolation when you can't bear your own body, right?

I recently did a gym induction program that was held near by and I thoroughly enjoyed actually working out in a Gym, however when I signed up to the local gym (different to the aforementioned) and had some issues with some of the other users who I had not had a great past with in school which has completely torn my confidence away. As such I'm looking for some home equipment that I can use that would help me get into shape.

I've been talking to a few people lately and they've been speaking highly of Rowing Machines, and I have been considering purchasing one that would fit in my bedroom and also be foldable and compact. I came across the Vfit Air Rowing machine for £179 and was considering saving up to use this as it seems convenient (if anyone has any experience with this Rowing Machine in particular please share!).

So yeah, my questions (finally! sorry for the long post).

Would a Rowing Machine be good to help me tone up my body?

Would a Rowing Machine help me lose weight? (although I don't mind staying at the same/gaining weight if it's muscle rather than fat)

Could you make any suggestions as to a good routine?

Would using a Rowing Machine for around 1-2 hours a night show anything within a month?

Would I need to lose weight to show muscle? I understand a lot of body builders put on weight prior to converting it into muscle, and was curious as to whether or not I would be too large to do anything of the sort.

Is there any other tips you could share?

Thanks to anyone who takes time to read this, and comments constructively. Also, if you have any negative comments would you kindly not post them as I do not have the best self-esteem.

I eagerly wait your response,

-Tonakai.

Edit: I forgot to mention that my Colorie intake is aproximately 800-1,000 a day.

Second Edit: When it comes to routine, I don't want anything too intense, and it also has to be flexible around college. I was considering maybe 5 mile walks twice a week, alongside using the Rowing Machine daily for approximately 1-2 hours.

Third Edit: Slightly off topic, but if anyone could suggest some good songs/playlists to work out to, I'd very much appreciate it.

Rowing machine is good at burning calories, depending on how hard you push yourself and yes, can help you lose weight when done with a good diet.

"toning" is used by people who want to strip away the fat and have more muscle definition- done by eating well.

HIIT is good along with body weight exercises.

No matter how much rowing you do, if you don't fix your nutrition, you will see no results.

Fat cannot turn into muscle.

My tip: Concentrate on your food. I can guarantee you it is the food.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'll look into sorting out my diet as soon as possible. Would you mind possibly giving me some pointers as to what to look for? I'm not entirely sure where to start.

Also, when it comes to my Diet, I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with it. I rarely eat any form of snack, I'm vegan and eat a lot of veg and fruit, I don't drink any form of Soda/fizzy drink, eat around 1.2k calories MAX a day and I have been losing weight incredibly slowly for months (approximately 2pounds or so a month) without doing any form of exercise or diet.

Anyhow, I really appreciate your advice, thanks.

Rowing is great exercise. But, keep in mind that the best exercise is the exercise that you actually do!! A rowing machine that sits in the corner doesn't help you lose one pound. Find an exercise that you love and do that. If you love or think you will love rowing, then go for it. It will help you lose weight as long is your nutrition is where it should be. A vegan diet of 1200 calories should be good enough to lose weight with moderate exercise. I know you said you do not drink any form of soda/fizzy drink, but do you drink things with sugar in it (ie: tea, juice, coffee, etc)? You really can drink away a lot of calories. One of the things I did that really helped me is to give up iced sweet tea!! I mainly drink water now.

Other than that, just maintain a healthy diet and active lifestyle. The weight will come off. You already are getting 2 lbs. off a month without even exercising!!! That would be 24 lbs in a year, right!!! You will get there. You will see muscle develop as you lose the fat layer that is covering the muscle. You will surely find it in your arms and legs first. Keep in mind it can take a meticulous diet in order to really see 6 pack abs!! Of course, genetics plays a big part of muscle development, too. My best advice to you is to not get hung up on the "looks". Just be the best you that you can be!!

Tell us what you are eating. Exact amounts (example 2 slices, or 100grams etc) and the foods you eat. Include drinks, sauces, alcohol etc.
